The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf centers on Vesemir in Kaer Morhen’s nearly-forgotten past. Netflix’s upcoming anime tie-in explores the Continent’s history for the first time in any of The Witcher media, including Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels.
In an interview with CBR, Screenwriter Beau DeMayo teased some of the changes that the monster-hunting profession underwent and the differences between Geralt of Rivia’s time and that of his mentor Vesemir. “I think, one, just there were more witchers. And you could make witchers during his time,” DeMayo said. He continued, “And I also think during Vesemir’s time as a witcher, there was more of [an] intersection between the court and witchers. In my mind, at least.
DeMayo clarified, “And again, this is a very unexplored territory in both the canon, video games, books, and now the series, that I think it wasn’t as– there was a taboo nature to being a witcher, but I do think by Geralt’s time, that taboo has only increased.” Finally, the writer stated, “I think that’s probably the biggest difference I see between the two of them. Mostly just seems like lonelier work for Geralt, but that could also be just because of Geralt.”
The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf takes place long before the events of Netflix’s live-action Witcher series. Produced by Studio Mir, the anime tie-in explores Kaer Morhen and Vesemir before both appear in the live-action show’s upcoming second season.

Although Vesemir’s past has never been explored, DeMayo explained in the same interview that he had been inspired by the details he saw in both Sapkowski’s novels and CD Projekt Red’s video games. The younger Vesemir was inspired by “just that twinkle in his eye that he always seemed to have in both the books and in the games.” DeMayo added that it was then just a matter of “aging that down to someone who’s in his youth and in his prime.”
The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf was announced in January 2020. As with other Witcher projects, news regarding the tie-in stopped coming after the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic reached its peak. It was speculated early on that the tie-in would premiere before the release of The Witcher Season 2. At the first ever WitcherCon, it was announced that Nightmare of the Wolf will premiere on Aug. 23. Season 2 of The Witcher is scheduled to hit Netflix on Dec. 17.
