The Dark Lords of the Sith embody the purest evil in the Star Wars universe. This ancient religious order of dark-side wielders is utterly devoted to the pursuit of absolute power, driven by fear, anger and hatred. Traditionally, upon pledging themselves to the Order, Sith Lords had a new name bestowed upon them by their Sith Master, consisting of a unique moniker preceded by the title of “Darth.”
The Skywalker Saga alone introduced Darths Sidious, Maul, Tyranus and Vader (and made reference to Darth Plagueis). These sinister figures have always been shrouded in a certain level of mystery. However, among all of these Sith Lords, Maul has possibly retained the most anonymity.
Darth Maul, who would later simply go by Maul when he turned his back on the Sith, is the only Dark Side user to have featured in the Skywalker Saga whose original name has never been revealed in canon. Vader was Anakin Skywalker, while Sidious and Tyranus both still regularly used their real names — Palpatine and Dooku, respectively. But Maul remains a more shadowy, enigmatic figure, and that might be for the best.
As well as The Phantom Menace, Maul has appeared in Solo: A Star Wars Story, the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels and various other Star Wars media. In the now-abandoned Legends continuity, his birth name appeared to be Maul, with the title of “Darth” simply added to it when he was taken on as an apprentice by Darth Sidious. The Legends junior novel The Wrath of Darth Maul later referred to the Zabrak in his youth as “the boy named Maul.” However, Disney’s new Star Wars canon seems to have altered this aspect of Maul’s origin. In the Rebels Season 2 finale arc, “Twilight of the Apprentice,” Maul tells Ezra Bridger, “I once had a real name, so long ago. I don’t remember. Now… Now I am called Maul.”
One recent Reddit thread offered up a few humorous suggestions as to Maul’s birth name — the suggestion that the sinister Darth Maul was once simply “Clarence” proved popular — but also offered some genuine insight into the origins of his name. A few commenters suggested that Maul’s original surname may have been Opress, due to The Clone Wars introducing his brother, Savage Opress. However, it isn’t clear whether Maul’s people, the Dathomirian Zabraks, have family surnames in the traditional sense; Savage’s other brother, Feral, was never referred to as Opress. Others have suggested that, because Maul was taken by Sidious when he was a child, he may have never known another name other. However, his reference to a “real name” to Ezra seemingly refutes that idea.
Both Darth Sidious and Darth Tyranus served in high-profile political positions during the Clone Wars, utilizing their political power to further the Sith plan for galactic domination. They, therefore, continued to use their original names of Palpatine and Dooku publicly, so as to keep their true Sith identities concealed. Maul, on the other hand, held no such position, acting solely as a lethal enforcer of the will of the Sith. While Sidious and Tyranus were both to serve as more Machiavellian schemers, Maul was designed to exude a more primal evil, making him more emblematic of the dark path that threatened Anakin Skywalker’s future in The Phantom Menace. Leaving Maul with nothing but his Sith name, a moniker that deliberately evokes violence and reflects his absolute commitment to the dark side, completes this image of him as an avatar of evil.
