10 Anime Villains With No Superpowers | CBR

The world of anime is packed with terrifying, powerful and memorable villains, with the likes of Madara Uchiha, Captain Sosuke Aizen, Captain Blackbeard and Cell ranking high among them. Villains with supernatural abilities are always going to be a formidable challenge, but what about villains with no larger-than-life powers?

Such villains rely on cunning, deception, manipulation and perhaps advanced technology to achieve their goals, and many of them are downright chilling, since they could very well exist in real life. Many memorable and exciting anime villains don’t need chi or jutsu to fight; they just need their fists, hacker skills, investigative abilities or even cooking talents to demolish the hero.

10 Near Was The Detective Who Defeated Kira (Death Note)

Near frowns

Not long after the downfall of the great detective L, a mysterious boy calling himself Near arrived, and he had one mission: to take down Kira once and for all. He was loosely Mello’s ally, but unlike Mello, he never made use of any Death Notes. He had other tools at his disposal.

Near suffered a few early setbacks, and he couldn’t easily keep up with Light passing his notebook to Teru Mikami and Kiyomi Takada. But ultimately, this slick antagonist cornered Light, and witnessed his death at Ryuk’s hands.

9 Azami Nakiri Sought To Remake Totsuki In His Own Image (Food Wars!)

Aside from the seemingly superhuman “god tongue,” there are no supernatural or magical elements in Food Wars!. Instead, student chefs compete with ordinary cooking, with each of them having his or her own specialty. Azami’s specialty, if it can be called that, is simply to have incredibly high standards.

Azami was a tyrannical parent, greatly pressuring his daughter Erina to be the best and realize her potential. At one point, Azami took over Totsuki and formed the oppressive Central, stamping out all resistance until only Soma and his friends remained to defy him. In the end, Azami was foiled.

8 Kirari Momobami Is An Expert Gambler & Manipulator (Kakegurui)

Kakegurui is set in high school, but in this school, the curriculum is all about high-stakes gambling, and the cruel student council rules with an iron fist. This school rewards cunning, wealth and ruthlessness, and the queen of this domain is the student council president, Kirari Momobami.

Kirari has no supernatural gifts, nor does she need any. This brilliant girl has the entire school in the palm of her hand, treating it more like a private circus than anything. She can also keep her enemies guessing by using her twin sister, Ririka, as a body double.

7 Thorkell Was A Mighty Viking Warrior (Vinland Saga)

Vinland Saga is set in medieval Europe, and there are no vampires, wizards or demons to be found. It’s a matter of man vs. man, and only the strongest can survive to see another battle. Thorkell is a bloodthirsty mercenary Viking who was, for a time, at odds with Thorfinn and Askeladd.

Thorkell is brutal, though not necessarily evil. Instead, he was simply an antagonist due to circumstance, and he needed only his brute strength, twin axes and remarkable skill to defeat countless foes. After a point, he became Thorfinn’s ally.

6 Inspector Zenigata Is Hell-Bent On Capturing Lupin (Lupin III)

Inspector Zenigata And The Police

For decades now, fans of the Lupin III franchise have cheered on the master thief Lupin III as he pulled off daring capers while staying one step ahead of Inspector Zenigata, his sworn enemy. Zenigata, like Thorkell, isn’t evil – he is simply an antagonist due to circumstance; a de facto villain.

Zenigata is an enforcer of the law, and he can’t stand seeing Lupin, Daisuke Jigen and the others run free, stealing priceless treasures all over 20th century Europe. So, he’ll capture them no matter what, but that’s easier said than done.

5 Tetta Kisaki Is One Scary Kid (Tokyo Revengers)

Most of the gangsters in Tokyo Revengers are junior high school boys, and despite being young adolescents, they are often brutal and merciless towards rival gangsters or even their own allies. Takemichi Hanagaki traveled back to 2005 to make things right, but the vicious Tetta Kisaki is in the way.

Kisaki schemes to become Tokyo’s #1 youth gang leader, and his future self is responsible for many heinous crimes, including Hinata Tachibana’s death. Takemichi knows exactly who his enemy is, and he even knows what the future holds, but Kisaki won’t be taken down so easily. This punk kid means business.

4 Kureo Mado Collected Quinques, But Was Otherwise An Ordinary Man (Tokyo Ghoul)

In the grim world of Tokyo Ghoul, only ghouls can use kagune, or supernatural appendages to fight, including Ken Kaneki. Human investigators cannot use such powers themselves, so they “borrow” these supernatural gifts to fight back.

A harvested kagune is called a quinque, and CCG investigators such as the merciless Kureo Mado can use them to slay ghouls in combat. Kureo was highly antagonistic, though, and intended to slay the harmless Hinami Fueguchi, until Touka Kirishima came to the rescue. Not all of humanity’s defenders are necessarily saints.

3 Hyoga Only Needs A Spear To Fight (Dr. Stone)

Anime Doctor Stone Hyoga Moon

The pseudo-isekai series Dr. Stone has very few supernatural elements, if any. Instead, it’s all about hard science, both for good and for evil, and Senku Ishigami must invent his way to a better future for humanity. The problem is that villains like Tsukasa and Hyoga are in the way.

For a time, Tsukasa ran the Empire of Might, an anti-science army. Hyoga was a powerful lieutenant of Tsukasa’s, using his unique spear and incredible skills to fight Senku, Kohaku, Magma, Chrome and the others. He was worth an entire squad of fighters all by himself, no magic required.

2 Rabier Was A Twisted & Cruel Nobleman (The Rising Of The Shield Hero)

rabier shield hero

In the long run, the cruel nobleman Rabier was only a minor villain in The Rising of the Shield Hero, but he did have a connection to Raphtalia the demi-human, and defeating him in combat was essential for Raphtalia to move on from her painful past. To Rabier, demi-humans like her are nothing more than slaves and playthings.

Rabier got what was coming when Naofumi and Raphtalia confronted him, and despite his dirty tricks, Rabier couldn’t defeat the two of them. He went down, and Raphtalia could move on at last.

1 Roberta Was An Indestructible Maid Assassin (Black Lagoon)

Roberta Confronts Her Mark

In the world of Black Lagoon, the line between hero and villain is fuzzy, but it can be safely said that Roberta the combat maid was generally a villain and antagonist, especially from Rock’s and Revy’s point of view. Robert was terrifying in battle, having strength, speed and agility that seemed almost superhuman.

This series doesn’t actually involve magic or the occult, though. Roberta is simply well-trained and determined to shed blood, all for the sake of Garcia Lovelace, her young master. She’s been compared to a killer robot more than once, and it’s easy to see why. She terrorized the Black Lagoon squad and even the U.S. Army more than once.
