WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 2 of Outer Banks, now streaming on Netflix.
As much as Season 1 of Netflix’s Outer Banks was filled with twists and turns, Season 2 has even more shocking moments that make it clear no one can be trusted outside of the Pogues. With that in mind, let’s examine the betrayals John B, his allies and his enemies experience in this treasure hunt world.
The Bahamas Shipmates
Season 2 kicks off by having skipper Terrance, Cleo and Stubbs getting word John B had a $50,000 bounty on his head. As such, they try to lock him and Sarah on their ship for the Bahamas cops to apprehend. They later broker a deal and take John’s gold bar, allying with the teens to steal Ward’s gold, with the Pogues still a tad skeptical.
Almost Everyone Turns on Rafe
Rafe has a hard time finding people to trust him due to his anger issues. Barry leaves him in a swamp for the Kildare cops to apprehend, teaching him a lesson in respect, while Topper later turns on Rafe, beating him senseless when Rafe attacks Sarah. Lastly, Wheezie tricks Rafe to help Sarah attempt to retrieve the Santo Domingo cross.
Carla Limbrey’s Killer Instinct
Carla is the one who sent the Pogues off on the quest for the cross, using her brother, Renfield, to intimidate them. However, when Renfield gets the relic and the healing shroud wasn’t inside, he makes fun of Carla. Shockingly, she put several bullets in Renfield at the hangar, wanting Rafe as her new partner after killing her kin.
Rafe’s Mean Streak
Rafe gets dark moments, echoing when he shot Sheriff Peterkin and she died. The first comes in the Bahamas when he tries to shoot John B, instead hitting Sarah in the gut. He doesn’t seem genuinely repentant for almost murdering his sister, which informs how he turns on the murderous Carla, throwing her down. She’s helpless without her crutches, as Rafe smirks and steals the cross following Renfield’s death.
Rose Drugging Sarah
Sarah’s step-mom, Rose, wants her to come with them to Guadeloupe after tragedy struck when Ward killed himself. She’s chartered a secret barge, and when a panicked Sarah informs her at the mansion how Rafe might have killed again, as Renfield’s in the truck with the cross, Rose pretends to be her friend. She offers Sarah tea, but it knocks her out, with the teen waking up on the high seas.
Ward’s Sinister Resurrection
There, Sarah discovers Ward faked his death. He blew his yacht up but actually escaped through the hatch, using scuba gear off the Caruthers to swim to safety. He barely escaped but confesses it was necessary to get Rafe off the hook for Peterkin’s death. It’d allow Ward to bring the family to the Caribbean, eking out a life with the Royal Merchant gold, however, he didn’t think Sarah would rebuke him.
Pope’s Family Secret
Pope discovers from Carla that his family, the Heywards, are tied to the cross and have a unique key in their possession. His dad points him to his great-grandmother, who confesses they’re the descendants of Cecilia, Denmark Tanny’s wife. Tanny was hanged trying to free Cecelia, who drowned trying to escape with her baby girl from Carla’s family slave estate centuries ago. Not knowing his heritage leaves Pope broken as it’s cost them their treasures (the gold and the cross) and a place in the history books.
Sarah Bonding With Topper
When John B’s held after being framed for Peterkin’s murder, Sarah stays with Topper. She later reforges a friendship with the ex as she hates how John basked in Ward’s “death,” eventually breaking up with the Pogue. She’d come to a bonfire with Topper, making John think they were back together, leading to a game of jealousy and a brawl. It just doesn’t feel right she’d go back to someone who was toxic in her past after telling John she’d marry him.
Big John’s Big Lie
John’s dad, Big John, is alive in Barbados, brokering a deal with Carla. He’ll get her the shroud if she helps his son. While it’s altruistic, we can’t trust someone who abandoned the kid to a treasure hunt that almost killed him and his friends. John won’t take the news in stride as his dad didn’t contact him, letting the teen suffer.
