While Netflix kept exact viewership figures for its original movies close to the chest in the past, the streamer revealed a model to determine whether or not upcoming blockbusters like Red Notice are a success for the company.
According to Variety, Scott Stuber, the head of Netflix’s original films division, said original blockbusters from the company need to attract 70 million or more viewers to qualify as a hit. In contrast, award season fare from Netflix is expected to generate viewership in a much more gradual manner.
Several prior Netflix blockbusters registered as hits under the studio’s new model for success. For example, the big-budget Zack Snyder feature Army of the Dead was projected to reach 72 million households within its first four weeks on the streamer. Meanwhile, the action film Extraction soared to 99 million views in its first four weeks of release, becoming the most-watched Netflix original movie ever in the process.
Red Notice isn’t the only upcoming Netflix blockbuster that’ll try to crack the 70 million viewers threshold. Other future big-budget projects from Netflix include the Ryan Reynolds vehicle The Adam Project and The Gray Man, the latter of which hails from directors Anthony and Joe Russo.
Red Notice stars Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot. Netflix subscribers can expect the film to drop on Nov. 12.
