The latest addition to Mattel‘s UNO Artiste Series features the work of acclaimed street artist, designer and activist Shepard Fairey.
Fairey is known for founding OBEY Clothing, as well as creating the “André the Giant Has a Posse” sticker campaign and the Barack Obama “Hope” poster. Now, he’s bringing his artistic talents to UNO.
“We had an initial meeting with someone from Mattel and got to talking about UNO, and he put me in touch with their team, and they were excited to do an Artiste Series with me,” Fairey said. “Working with Mattel has been great. The team was very receptive to my suggestion that my collaborative set uses sustainable materials. The UNO team was very receptive to that idea and my idea to make the imagery on the cards related to environmental responsibility.”
“I’m very grateful to UNO for partnering with me on this and going sustainable, and to anyone who likes my art and likes the game, your support means a lot symbolically because if people are enthusiastic about this sustainable product, it can encourage more of the same,” he concluded.
UNO ARTISTE SERIES: SHEPARD FAIREY
- The UNO Artiste Series: Shepard Fairey deck is the latest product released under the UNO Artiste Series special collection.
- Created in collaboration with street art legend, activist, illustrator and founder of OBEY, Shepard Fairey, the product’s unique design elements include:
- As the first UNO Artiste Series deck to incorporate 100% recyclable cards, paper belly band, paper tray, wood-free paper and the removal of cellophane, Fairey’s designs feature environmentally-themed imagery make the entire project aesthetically and conceptually cohesive.
- A consistent illustration style and limited color palette mirroring Fairey’s signature style that fans love, including his wife, Amanda Fairey, being prominently featured across the deck’s artwork.
- In keeping with Fairey’s fascination with repetition in his own art, the deck includes the phrases “Card Game” and “Artiste Series” repeated on the front of the package.
- Four special two-sided cards that create two different art pieces when put together.
- As part of this partnership, Mattel will be making a donation on behalf of Fairey to the Ocean Conservancy, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the oceans through federal and state legislation, in support of the artist’s initiatives.
- As a paper-based product, UNO has always been committed to creating a low-waste and reusable card game for all people to enjoy.
- This deck follows the launch of UNO Nothin’ But Paper, the first fully recyclable UNO deck without cellophane packing materials, part of UNO’s plan to remove the cellophane from 100% of standard, paper-based decks entirely in 2021 and Mattel’s goal to achieve 100% recycled, recyclable or bio-based plastic materials across all products and packaging by 2030.
