Star Wars: The 5 Weirdest Things About Jabba the Hutt’s Body

Jabba the Hutt might be the foulest and revolting creature in all of Star Wars. The slug-like crime lord had a brief appearance in A New Hope, but his full power and influence were on display in Return of the Jedi when he held Han Solo as a frozen prisoner. Jabba finally found his demise at the hands of Princess Leia aboard his own sail barge as he attempted to execute Luke, Han and Chewbacca by feeding them to the Sarlacc in the Great Pit of Carkoon.

However, casual viewers of the franchise may not know that Hutt is not just a title. It’s actually a species, which means that Jabba is not the only slug-like thing in the galaxy. Here are some of the weirdest and grossest things about Jabba the Hutt and other members of his horrifying species.

Hutts Have an Immense Size

The only thing bigger than Jabba’s ruthless reputation as a crime lord was his physical size, but that is not just something applicable to Jabba. The entire Hutt species was massive. Full-grown, Hutts could reach a length of over four meters, and their generous appetites allowed their girth to more than match their length. In fact, because of their gluttony and mammoth size, most Hutts were known for commanding their crime empires from a hover platform, so they had to move as little as possible.

However, despite their enormous full-grown size, Hutt offspring were born barely a meter in length. In the premiere movie for The Clone Wars, Anakin and Ahsoka rescued Jabba’s son, Rotta the Huttlet, from the Separatists. While Ahsoka thought that the child was kind of cute, Anakin could not agree with his new Padawan and repeatedly mentioned its awful smell.

Jabba and Other Hutts Live Incredibly Long Lives

Obviously, different species in Star Wars live to different ages, but the Hutts were known for their longevity. For example, Jabba was over six hundred years old when killed on Tatooine with no sign of slowing down. So it’s suspected that the species could easily live for over a thousand years.

Longevity was a special benefit to their species’ occupation choice. Building a criminal empire takes time and commitment, and the Hutts had plenty of both. Over millenniums, the Hutts built an empire that had its own designation in the galaxy — Hutt Space. It was so influential that both the Republic and the Empire made agreements to pass through it. The Republic even ignored much of the Hutts’ nefarious deeds while the Empire utilized their criminal enterprises to its own advantage.

Hutts Possess Superior Strength

Despite their lack of mobility and their puny, little arms, the Hutts were actually immensely strong. If one of them got a hold of something, it wasn’t getting away easily. Because of their tendencies toward lives of luxury, most Hutts sat around and ate all day, gorging themselves on various delicacies. Nonetheless, the Hutts had enormous physical potential.

Darth Vader War of the Bounty Hunters: The Sound of Metal introduced the jacked Bokku the Hutt, who made Jabba look like the slob that he truly was. Bokku’s arms and chest were huge, and he had a six-pack running down the front of his slug-like body. It’s a good thing that the Hutts liked to rule from the background because if they all got that in shape, they would be pretty formidable.

Hutts Don’t Have a Full Skeleton

Jabba the Hutt

Despite having arms and the potential for substantial strength, Hutts don’t have a full skeleton. Details are sparse, though. Perhaps that’s because no one has ever done an autopsy on one. According to Star Wars: The Complete Visual Dictionary, Hutts don’t have a skeleton at all. However, Wookieepedia states that Hutts have a “skeletal spine.” That would make them more of a snake-like species than a slug. Regardless, it’s odd that something could grow to be so large and muscular without a full skeletal structure. However, their large tails allowed them to travel through the muck and mud of their home planet, where legs would have simply sunk.

Hutts Produce Slimy Secretions

In the untold ages of the past, Hutts originated on Nal Hutta, a planet known for its oppressive atmosphere, sauna-like heat and greasy rains. As such, the Hutts’ bodies adapted to be comfortable in that environment. Their thick, leathery skin secreted oils and mucus. The result was slimy, slippery and smelly worms that became known as the Hutts. So, it would seem like their bodies fit their station as slimy criminal gangsters. That’s why Jabba the Hutt picked a wasteland like Tatooine for his base of operations. The planet’s crime offered business for him, and the hot climate was reminiscent of home.
