Fear Street Part 3: 1666 – Sarah Fier Finally Gets Justice | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Fear Street Part 3: 1666, now streaming on Netflix.

In Fear Street Part 3: 1666, we discover the witch, Sarah Fier, and her cursing Shadyside is all made up. It’s a gimmick the Goodes have spread for centuries, from Solomon to 1994’s Sheriff Nick, all so they could have someone to misdirect the public to as they go about summoning killers to spill blood for Satan. It’s a sadistic media spin, but while Sarah’s made the scapegoat and hanged by bigots, she does get the perfect ending as she’s responsible for Nick’s death and the bloodline ending.

In 1666, Solomon pins it all on Sarah who figures out that he’s the witch. But after apprehending her, it’s easy to smear her name for being a lesbian. Toxic males who she and Hannah rejected have already started the lie, so when Solomon arrests her, it’s easy to get the townsfolk to hang her quickly, not realizing he’s taking lives to enrich the land.

Seeing them use Sarah as a haunting figure over the centuries is indeed heartbreaking, and early on it feels like there won’t be justice for her. But the finale changes that and syncs up with her final words before she died, warning Solomon that the truth will follow him forever.

When Nick, Solomon’s descendant, battles Deena in the cave in 1994, it’s brutal, as she’s mentally wrecked from reliving Sarah’s memories. The fact that Deena’s also been persecuted as a lesbian with Sam feels like Sarah and Hannah all over, and it looks like Nick will win in the cave as he’s inches away from stabbing Deena to death.

However, right next to them is the gooey gateway to hell, which Nick’s family has used to pull slashers out or summon the devil to possess killers. In a Hail Mary play, Deena grabs Nick’s arm and plunges it into the goo, which is the heartbeat of the satanic lair, causing Nick to start absorbing the memories of those he condemned to die.

Nick starts seeing the possessed avatars and their victims, feeling the pain of all those who died over centuries. With all these visions of people plagued by the curse, he starts losing his mind, wandering around frantically. It ends with Deena grabbing his knife and plunging it into his eye, with his last memory being Sarah warning Solomon.

This knife is an ironic weapon because Solomon gave it to Sarah as a thank you for bartering and checking up on him after losing his family, so it represents the last time the Goodes were… good. Thus, this makes it all poetic that it’s used to kill the witch and finally ends the curse, because through this symbolic murder, the rebellious spirit of Sarah has lived on to honor her promise of justice. And more so, while Sarah was separated from Hannah, her presence here has allowed Deena to save Sam as Sam’s possession ends with Nick’s death.

Netflix’s popular Fear Street trilogy, based on the works of R.L. Stine, stars Sadie Sink, Kiana Madeira and Gillian Jacobs. Part 1: 1994, Part 2: 1978 and Part 2: 1666 are all available to stream on Netflix. Each entry has spent time in the streaming service’s top 10.
