What We Do in the Shadows S3: Release Date, Plot, Trailer & News to Know

Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s cult favorite mockumentary-style horror-comedy What We Do in the Shadows saw success upon its 2014 release. Five years later, the Clement-created TV spin-off of the same name continued the cheeky tone of the film on the small screen via FX and had fans rejoicing, finally able to revel in more vampiric shenanigans.

What We Do in the Shadows concluded its second season in June of 2020, shortly after being renewed for a third. Here’s what we know so far about What We Do in the Shadows Season 3 story, trailer and release date.

What We Do in the Shadows’ Story So Far

What We Do in the Shadows follows four vampire housemates: Nandor the Relentless, the self-appointed leader of the house, much to the others’ dismay; Laszlo and Nadja, a married couple; and Colin Robinson, an energy vampire who drains people for his own power by boring them. Guillermo, Nandor’s familiar is featured prominently, often getting the short end of the stick and dragged into the vampires’ messy situations. Guillermo dreams of becoming a vampire, hoping that Nandor will turn him since he’s been of service for over 10 years.

Baron Afanas, an ancient vampire from the Old Country, visits the vampires at their Staten Island home and informs them of their plan to take over the Western Hemisphere. This is of course no small feat for a group of bumbling vampire roommates. Despite some of the vampires’ violent pasts as killers and conquerors, they’re in way over their head. They attend local city council meetings, attempt to form alliances with other ridiculous vampires in the area and run into all sorts of hang-ups, never truly getting the whole takeover thing off the ground.

Eventually Baron Afanas is accidentally killed by Guillermo after letting in sunlight through an open door. When Guillermo has his housemates’ DNA tested to discover their heritage, he gets tested as well to find out that he’s a descendent of the famous vampire hunter, Van Helsing. Eventually, Guillermo has trouble reconciling his desire to become a vampire after having killed several vampires through the series and moves in with his mother in the Bronx. He abandons Nandor and his housemates, who are essentially hopeless without Guillermo. But when Nadia, Laszlo, Nandor and Colin Robinson are invited to Nouveau Théâtre des Vampires, a premier event for only the very best of the vampire elite, Guillermo has to step in and save the day once it’s revealed that it was all a trick.

The housemates, who were sentenced to death in Season 1 by the Vampiric Council for Baron Afanas’ murder, have been duped by the Council and easily fell for the trap. When Guillermo returns to the vampires’ home to get a mini fridge for his mom’s place, he sees the invitation and immediately knows that his friends are in danger — likely up for execution once more. Guillermo arrives, taps into his Helsing roots, kills many more vampires like a total badass, and thus, while saving his friends, reveals his true nature to them.

What Is the Plot of What We Do in the Shadows Season 3?

A press release for Season 3 of What We Do in the Shadows teased some saucy tidbits about what’s to come for our favorite vampire roomies, stating that “the vampires are elevated to a new level of power and will encounter the vampire from which all vampires have descended, a tempting Siren, gargoyles, werewolf kickball, Atlantic City casinos, wellness cults, ex-girlfriends, gyms, and supernatural curiosities galore.” Harvey Guillén, who plays Guillermo, Nandor’s familiar, told Digital Spy, “We’re picking up right where we left off, that’s for sure.” So we’ll see how the vampires being privy to Guillermo’s vampire killing plays out.

Also in Season 3, energy vampire Colin Robinson will be turning 100 years old, so we’ll see what festivities — or lack thereof — are in store. And sweet, sweet Nandor will face an “eternal-life crisis” and attempt to find more meaning in his life. “Will he find love, or is he destined to be an immortal bachelor with 37 ex-wives?” the press release asks.

No new casting developments have been revealed, but showrunner/executive producer Paul Simms and executive producer Stefani Robinson teased that “someone we all know and love” would be added to the season in some capacity. Simms also said that they don’t plan to repeat any Jackie Daytona adventures (booooo!), but they do have “plans for the show to go into completely different directions.”

Does What We Do in the Shadows Season 3 Have a Trailer?

On July 14, FX released a brief teaser for Season 3 of What We Do in the Shadows that features Nandor enjoying a beautiful, sunny day via VR as Guillermo, Laszlo and Colin Robinson follow behind him in their hallway before he bumps into a wall.

What Is the Release Date For What We Do in the Shadows Season 3?

Due to COVID-related delays, filming for Season 3 began in Feb. of this year — much later than intended based on the previous two seasons’ shooting schedules. With Season 1 and 2 having premiered in Mar. 2019 and Apr. 2020, respectively, these new delays have pushed back that Spring premiere trend significantly. Therefore, What We Do in the Shadows‘ Season 3 will premiere on FX on Sept. 2, with the season’s first two episodes debuting back to back.

This article will be updated as more information becomes available.

What We Do in the Shadows stars Kayvan Novak, Natasia Demetriou, Matt Berry, Mark Proksch and Harvey Guillen. Taika Waititi co-produces alongside Jemaine Clement, Scott Rudin, Paul Simms, Stefani Robinson and Garrett Basch. The show’s first and second seasons are available to stream on Hulu.
