WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Flash Season 7, Episode 17, “Heart of the Matter, Part 1,” which aired Tuesday on The CW.
It’s a speedster family affair in The Flash as Barry and Iris’ children from the future, Impulse (Bart) and XS (Nora), help him take on legions of Godspeeds, but now they must face the living god of speed.
In the trailer for the Season 7 finale, “Heart of the Matter, Part 2,” August Heart claims the throne, announces to the Flash that he’s the living god of speed and threatens to burn down Central City. It then cuts to scenes of the Godspeed androids causing havoc, terrorizing the city and attacking Team Flash. At the end of the video, Barry declares they don’t need a big idea… they need a fast one.
In the 150th milestone episode, “The Heart of the Matter, Part 1,” Impulse and XS come to the present and help defend the city against the Godspeeds who are at war with each other. Barry is ecstatic to learn that he has a son in Bart, but when the Godspeeds zero in on Impulse, he knows something’s amiss and refuses to let him join the fight. His sister Nora comforts him and it becomes apparent that Bart has his own arch-nemesis in Godspeed, but that doesn’t stop him from impulsively speeding off to help a captured Jay Garrick. Unfortunately, it doesn’t end well for him.
In the midst of this, Iris returns from the Still Force as Team Flash attempts to return August Heart’s memory with their neuro hypercollider, in an effort to learn more about what started this disaster. August is the creator of the Godspeed androids, but without his knowledge in this post-Crisis universe, they’re unclear about how to stop the Godspeed Civil War. When the Flash enters August’s mind to seek out the answers, he meets August, who is back in his villainous form with his memories intact. He tells the Scarlet Speedster that he has all the answers, many of which will be revealed in the season finale.
The Season 7 finale of The Flash airs Tuesday, July 20 on The CW.
