Ted Lasso Season 2 is coming to Apple TV+ later this month, and the show will continue to tell the story of the now-regulated AFC Richmond and their club manager. But while the series focuses on Ted, an American football coach who takes over an English Premier League football club, there’s plenty of other characters who all have their own issues. Here’s where Season 1 of Ted Lasso left its main characters.
Ted Lasso
Ted Lasso, the optimistic yet inexperienced manager of AFC Richmond, ended Season 1 with his team being relegated from the Premier League, a loss that upset not only him but the team as a whole. Fortunately, Ted is a believer through and through, so the loss didn’t keep him down for long. He told the club’s owner, Rebecca Walton, he would accept her decision to fire him as a result of his losing season, but she decides to keep him on as the team manager, leaving him ready to try again next season.
Ted went through many ups and downs while being the manager for Richmond. The big issue was that everyone expected him to fail and weren’t afraid to say that to his face. But worse for Ted, his personal life also saw some struggles when he got divorced from his wife Michelle. However, through his struggles, he managed to maintain his positive attitude and maintain his ideals that sports can be more than just the final score.
Rebecca Welton
Rebecca started the first season of Ted Lasso on a mission to destroy AFC Richmond, but over the course of the season, she warmed up to Ted and the team and embraced her role as owner. Unfortunately, her change of heart came too late, and her plans to sabotage actually worked when Richmond was relegated at the end of the season. She doesn’t revel in the loss, though, and she and Ted commit to doing their best next season.
Despite being torn up about her divorce, Rebecca improves her relationships with people as part of her journey in the first season. She opens herself back up to build friendships as she recovers, even reuniting with her childhood best friend Flo “Sassy” Collins and creating bonds with Keeley Jones and Ted. This change helps Rebecca become a better person and embrace her role as part of the Richmond team.
Roy Kent
Roy Kent was the captain of AFC Richmond, but he struggled at the end of the season and left the final game of the Richmond season with an injury he sustained stopping Jaime Tartt from scoring a goal. He was an undeniable force on the team and in the locker room, bringing with him his experience and devotion to the sport. But despite leaving the sport, Roy left his role of captain Isaac’s capable hands and is currently dating Keeley.
Jaime Tartt
Jaime Tartt started the season as the arrogant star of AFC Richmond, but he didn’t finish the season as part of the team at all. As part of Rebecca’s efforts to sabotage the club, she instigated Jamie’s return to Manchester. He was only part of Richmond on loan from the Manchester team, so Rebecca returned him right after he finally opened himself up to be part of the team and put others before himself. But despite no longer being part of AFC Richmond, Ted still has an impact on the young star player. After he helped relegate his former team, Jaime was sent a note by Ted congratulating him on his selfless play, something they had worked on during his stint with Richmond.
Keeley Jones
Keeley Jones didn’t start off as a real part of AFC Richmond. She was working as a model when she dated Jaime Tart, which is how she was introduced to the other members of the team. Eventually, that relationship came to an end when Keeley realized Jaime couldn’t provide the mature relationship she was looking for. However, their time together did lead her to a new job with the club using her previous experience in advertising to help the players branch out into sponsorships. Keely also goes on to develop a relationship with Roy Kent and helps support him through the end of his career.
Coach Beard
Coach Beard is Ted’s assistant coach who similarly had no experience coaching soccer prior to following Ted from the world of college football. A man of surprising depth, a chess master and a calm presence, he reveals late in the season that he actually does care about winning. He believes in Ted’s philosophies, but he’s also ready to take their coaching careers to the next level and work towards not just personal growth but wins and championships as well.
Nathan Shelley
Nathan Shelley went through notable growth during Ted Lasso’s first outing. He’s introduced as a good-humored but timid kit man, but throughout the season, he proves himself a valuable member of the team and is rewarded for his efforts and passions. Near the end of Season 1, Nathan gets promoted to assistant coach as a result of his repeated good advice relayed to both Ted and the players alike.
Starring Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Brendan Hunt, Brett Goldstein, Phil Dunster, Nick Mohammed, Jeremy Swift and Juno Temple, Season 2 of Ted Lasso premieres July 23 on Apple TV+, with subsequent episodes debuting weekly.
