Abandoned is an upcoming PlayStation game that was announced in April. However, in that short span of time, it’s quickly become hotly debated among fans. An esoteric and hotly-debated survival horror game, some online have theorized that Abandoned is an alias for a reimagining of a cancelled Silent Hill game.
While developer Blue Box Game Studios has said that it is in no way associated with Konami or Hideo Kojima, delays and lack of information on the title have contributed to the rumors surrounding the game. Though not much has been revealed yet, here’s what gamers should know about Abandoned.
What Is Abandoned About?
Abandoned‘s story involves a man named Jason Longfield, who, as the game’s title would suggest, has been left in a mysterious forest. Unsure of where he is or what he was doing there beforehand, Jason wanders around the forest before discovering that he had been kidnapped and brought to the forest for a nefarious reason. After learning this, Jason’s goal is to survive the ordeal and ultimately escape from the forest of darkness. This plot makes Abandoned sound like a fairly typical survival horror-adventure, but its just vague, slight and esoteric enough to fuel those who claim it has some sort of connection to Silent Hill.
Abandoned’s Trailer
So far, the game’s only trailer is its announcement teaser, which showcases Abandoned‘s incredibly realistic graphics that bring to life a world of realistic, visceral fear. This crisp and macabre landscapes are coupled with a voice over explaining the game’s premise, asking viewers to imagine themselves in a situation in which they awaken in this remote, desolate local with no knowledge of how they got there. First-person action, interaction with the environment or enemies are mostly unseen in the trailer, which makes it even spookier and more mysterious.
News to Know About Abandoned
Abandoned and it’s developer, Blue Box, came seemingly out of nowhere this past April. The game is a realistic first-person horror game, with every element affecting Jason also affecting the gameplay. For instance, running or becoming tired will affect the accuracy of shooting long-range weapons. These weapons also realistically have slow releases, meaning players have to time and line up their shots just right. This, along with the dread of the obstacles faced throughout the game, are meant to accentuate the ever-present sense of dread and fear.
Many quickly remarked at the similarities between Abandoned‘s teaser and P.T., the playable demo for the now-cancelled Silent Hills from Hideo Kojima. The lack of details only emboldened fans, and the rumors became so rampant that Blue Box had to make a statement explaining that Abandoned is not associated with Silent Hill‘s owner or creator and that it’s simply a small studio’s first big project. Unfortunately, the developer then had to delay a previously-announced trailer app that was supposed to launch in June. The app will now release in August alongside Abandoned’s first trailer.
When Does Abandoned Release?
Abandoned was initially said to be releasing in late 2021. However, Blue Box has not said anything else on the subject since, and the recent delays may indicate that the game is also taking longer than anticipated. Extending the wait for more information has done nothing to quell the rampant speculation. Regardless, when Abandoned does release, it’ll be available for PlayStation 5 and PC.
