Paul Giamatti, who played Aleksei Sysevich/Rhino in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, says he’s in no rush to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
When asked about rumors of Rhino appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Giamatti told ComicBook.com, “I’m happy. I hadn’t followed any of [these rumors]. Somebody else just asked me about this, so I hadn’t been following. I’m okay with that. I’m certainly okay to just leave it all where it is. It’s fine with me.”
The aforementioned rumors of Rhino in No Way Home surfaced in May, when it was reported that the film would finally bring the Sinister Six to live-action. “Sony has obviously copped to the fact that Doc Ock is in the movie, Alfred Molina, and Jamie Foxx is Electro,” Collider’s Jeff Sneider said. “Those are the only two that we really know. I’m pretty sure that Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin will be the main villain in this film. So that’s three. I’d heard Sandman, Rhino and Lizard. Those were the other three that I heard. I don’t know if any of those are confirmed. I don’t know if Rhys Ifans or Paul Giamatti or Thomas Haden Church had been seen on set, I haven’t really been paying attention to the paparazzi photos. But that was my understanding is that all six of those past Spider-Man villains because it doesn’t really make sense to introduce new villains necessarily in this movie.”
Giamatti’s Aleksei Sysevich appeared in the opening scene of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which saw Spidey thwart Aleksei’s attempt to steal a truck full of plutonium, landing the villain in jail. However, he reappeared in the film’s closing moments, this time with a mechanical rhino suit courtesy of Harry Osborn and Oscorp. While his fate was left unclear, he was smashed with a web-propelled sewer grate just before the credits began to roll, leading many to believe this would be another win for the wall-crawler.
Directed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man: No Way Home stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Zendaya as MJ, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Tony Revolori as Flash Thompson, Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus and Jamie Foxx as Electro. The film arrives in theaters Dec. 17.
