Black Adam Introduces a Classic Superman Threat to the DCEU | CBR

Black Adam actor Sarah Shahi revealed that the film will introduce Intergang, a classic group of Superman villains.

“I play a character named Adrianna, and she’s a freedom fighter that’s leading this big resistance against an evil, malicious group called Intergang,” Shahi told The Hollywood Reporter, describing Adrianna Tomaz —  also known as Isis, the female counterpart to Black Adam in the DC Universe — as a person “who’s incredibly tough, who’s a badass, who’s human but goes head to head with superheroes.”

Intergang is a criminal group that utilizes alien technology supplied by agents from Apokolips, home to Darkseid. Created by Jack Kirby, the organization first appeared in Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen Issue #133, in October 1970. They would go on to become a regular villainous presence across the DC Universe, particularly in various Superman series.

Over the years, Intergang has included the likes of Lex Luthor, Toyman and Magpie. While the organization has previously appeared on the small screen, notably on episodes of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, the Arrowverse and in animated form on Superman: The Animated Series and Young Justice, their inclusion in Black Adam will be the group’s first film appearance.

Whether Black Adam will maintain Intergang’s Apokolips connection remains to be seen, considering that Darkseid and his fiery home planet currently remain limited to Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which has a tenuous position in the canon of the DCEU. Shahi did not reveal further details, but she called the vibe of Black Adam “just out of this world” and “make-believe to the nth degree.”

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Black Adam stars Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone and Sarah Shahi as Adrianna Tomaz, with Mo Amer, Marwan Kenzari, Bodhi Sabongui, James Cusati-Moyer and Uli Latukefu. The film arrives in theaters July 29, 2022.
