Ash Ketchum has somewhat of a contradictory personality. He normally has a bright and sunny disposition, showing a gentle side with his Pokémon when needed. But when it comes to battling, he can be fierce, stubborn, and a sore loser.
Pokémon can have big personalities too, some even bigger than Ash. These Pokémon have each developed their own individual characteristics, perhaps as a result of events that happened to them in the past, while some are just born the way they are. Others change with time and build character through hardship, and their personality changes with them.
10 Snivy Is Cool, Calm, Collected, & Refreshingly Candid
Snivy is an aloof and mysterious Pokémon. She does not associate with the abundance of cute Pokémon in the anime, calling out Emolga for using its cuteness to get whatever it wanted, for example. She rarely laughs and can use her vines to grab things or to express herself, sometimes using them to slap other Pokémon when they’re being silly. The anime is filled with stories of trainers abandoning Pokémon, but Snivy supposedly left her former trainer because they did not meet her expectations. Snivy is calm and collected, with a personality that sets her apart from other Pokémon.
9 Pignite’s Traumatic Past Helped It Build Character
Pignite has been through a lot and, as a result, has a multifaceted personality. As a Tepig, the Fire Pig Pokémon dealt with low self-esteem after it was tied to a post and abandoned by its former trainer Shamus. It was good-natured but sensitive, and it would feel disappointed in itself whenever it lost it. Tepig tried hard to improve as a competitor, however, matching Ash’s determination. When it confronted Shamus and put his past behind him, Pignite became more confident and didn’t feel too down when he lost, though it was still sensitive to criticism.
8 Greninja Is A Lone Wolf Who Grew Into A Fierce Competitor
The stoic Greninja has a certain aura, but its personality changed dramatically from when it was a Froakie. Viewers learned of the Ninja Pokémon’s back story during a flashback in “Cloudy Fate, Bright Future!” Froakie avoided playing with others of its kind to train alone, which the others didn’t like, so they attacked it. Froakie was then given to Professor Sycamore and offered to trainers without much luck.
Due to its disobedience, it didn’t get along with any of its trainers until Ash came along. As Greninja grew and evolved, it went from stubborn and picky to loyal and obedient, to the point where it bonded with Ash to become Ash-Greninja.
7 Gengar Is Mischievous, Playful, & One Half Of A Comedy Duo
The Shadow Pokémon is known for being sinister and mischievous. In a memorable episode of the anime, “The Tower of Terror,” Gengar and Haunter joked around like a comedy duo, and when they failed to amuse Ash, Gengar responded by pulling Ash and Pikachu’s spirits out of their bodies. Ash’s Gengar’s penchant for tricking humans stems from its resentment of its previous trainer, but after bonding with Ash, it became friendlier.
6 Scraggy Started Looking For Fights As Soon As It Was Born
Scraggy came out of its egg kicking and screaming. In “Scraggy-Hatched to be Wild!,” the 17th episode of the Black & White series, as soon as it hatched it immediately went around picking fights with anyone and anything around it. As a scrawny-looking Pokémon that is so headstrong and confident, Scraggy is definitely interesting to watch. Scraggy also has a caring, gentler side, as shown when playing with Axew in “Scraggy and the Demanding Gothita!,” and it will always try to help its friends when they’re in need.
5 Pikachu Is An Impressionist & A Movie Star
Pikachu is the face of Pokémon. He has been by Ash’s side for what feels like forever and is unswervingly loyal, but he still has a cheeky side. Pikachu is smart, friendly, and does a number of charming imitations of other Pokémon. Any Pokémon that’s appeared in nearly every episode of the anime, has a series of Pokémon shorts, and is the star of a movie must have a pretty big personality.
4 Wobbuffet Is A Goofball With Impeccable Timing
The Patient Pokémon is quirky and goofy yet strangely lovable. Jessie’s Wobbuffet has a habit of spontaneously popping out of its Poké Ball for no other reason than to say its own name.
Wobbuffet is frequently used for comic relief, as seen notably in “Claydol Big and Tall,” when it dresses up as a maid and a giant Claydol falls in love with it. But the dopey Pokémon has more sides to him than his buffoonery. He cares deeply for Jessie, is good friends with Meowth, and once fell in love with a Kirlia.
3 Squirtle Is A Stylish Leader With A Sinister Side
Squirtle oozes style. As the leader of the Squirtle Squad, it has to have a big personality, if only to pull off its distinctive shades. Although loyal, Squirtle has a mischievous side, especially compared to the mature and serious Bulbasaur. It was also shown to have a sinister side in “Island of the Giant Pokémon,” the 17th episode of the anime, when it suggested that Ash’s group had all been eaten by wild Pokémon.
2 Charizard Is An Icon Whose Antics Have Gone Down In Pokémon History
Ash’s Charizard is notorious for its display in the Indigo League and its general refusal to battle. As a Charmander, the Flame Pokémon was abandoned by its former trainer, Damian, leaving it emotionally scarred. Charmander did whatever Ash told him, but when it became a Charmeleon, it started being disobedient. This led up to Ash’s battle with Ritchie in the Indigo League, when Charizard casually took a nap instead of battling. The iconic Pokémon eventually came around, but its personality left a big impression on fans.
1 Meowth Is A Multifaceted Mischief-Maker Who Changed Himself For Love
Meowth’s origin story was shown in “Go West Young Meowth,” which told how he learned how to walk and talk like a human to impress a female Meowth, only to be rejected. His one-liners, naïvety, idealism, and general naughtiness have endeared him to fans over the years. He has also shown a softer side, as seen in “They Might Not Be Giants!,” when he cries at hearing about Litten’s past. Meowth has stolen the show in countless episodes of the anime and has one of the biggest personalities of them all.
