Harley Quinn will be armed with multiple weapons and don various outfits in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
“She has a mission outfit to start with that’s very different. She didn’t come on the mission wearing a ball gown,” Harley Quinn portrayer Margot Robbie said during a set visit attended by Screen Rant and other outlets. “Although with Harley, she could have been like, ‘I just like it, this is what I wanted, I wanted to be pretty today’… My baseball bat is next to my bed back in L.A… I’ve got other weapons in this one. Many, many weapons, but mainly one actually.”
The ball gown Robbie is referring to is the red dress that can be seen in many of the trailer shots. While it starts off as “glamorous gown,” Robbie said that it goes through a destructive progression as the movie goes on. “I think we are down to three versions of the dress… we got to figure out — trying to work it into a mood, where we rip off one bit to do some cool fight shit with it.”
Harley won’t just be getting new gear when the film releases in theaters and on HBO Max on Aug. 6. She will also be getting her own superpower. “The idea is that there is a ‘Harley Vision,’ like how she sees the world and how she sees things, and it’s possibly with animated flowers and tweety birds,” production designer Beth Mickle said, referencing another moment from the trailer that sees Harley fighting along a stream of animated flowers. “She’s very happy, so we explored some concept art to see what that could look like, and how we would render it in the film. Just used sparingly, but I think effectively.”
