The Marvel Cinematic Universe is responsible for some of the highest-grossing superhero movies of all time and it’s done this on the backs of its amazing heroes. People love the heroes, with their clever quips, amazing powers, and colorful costumes and that love has created new icons. One of the places where things haven’t gone as well for the MCU is with the villains, though.
However, there are some MCU villains that have made a splash because of just how terrifying they can be. Whether it be because of their massive powers, their fiendish goals, or what they represent, some of the best MCU villains are the scariest.
10 Karli Morgenthau Showed How Quickly The Best Intentions Could Transform Into Something Sinister
Karli Morgenthau is very different from the comic Flag-Smasher and that’s what made her such a compelling villain. It also made her very frightening. Karli isn’t some kind of world-ending monster, she’s a woman with a legitimate grievance that has decided to solve her problems through violence. Now, it’s hard to argue with her goals or her motivations but her actions just kept getting worse.
It’s one thing to target the people responsible or to attack military bases or superheroes, but Karli eventually stopped caring about the collateral damage from her quest. Karli is the perfect example of how the road to Hell is paved with good intentions and that’s what makes her so scary.
9 Vulture Was A Common Man Driven Angry By The Realities Of Capitalism
The scariest part about Vulture is that pretty much anyone can be him. Vulture had a family and business to run and felt responsible for both his family and employees. When his lucrative salvage job was taken away from him because of crony capitalism, he lost his mind a bit. Repurposing alien technology, he became the Vulture and tried to keep providing for his family and employees.
Vulture became more and more unhinged as time went on, getting scarier and scarier as the things he was trying to do for everyone around him were taken from him by an uncaring system and a teen with spider-powers who had the financial backing of Iron Man.
8 Abomination Was A Monster Who Could Fight It Out With The Hulk
With Abomination’s appearance in the Shang-Chi trailer, he is back in the minds of MCU fans. The Incredible Hulk is the forgotten MCU movie and Abomination is its most dangerous legacy, a powerful monster able to go toe to toe with the Hulk. There are few beings as frightening as one who can sight it out with the Green Goliath.
His prior life as special forces trooper, Emil Blonsky, means that Abomination is an expert fighter and an all-around dangerous villain. It’s one thing to just be really strong, but Abomination’s combination of strength and skill make him a frightening foe.
7 Kurse Was The Greatest Weapon Of The Dark Elves
Thor: The Dark World has a bad reputation for a lot of reasons but it also contains one of the scariest MCU villains of them all. The Dark Elves and their leader Malekith weren’t exactly the scariest until viewers were introduced to Kurse. Kurse was the Dark Elves’ ultimate weapon and proved how dangerous it could be quickly.
Kurse wasn’t a person, it was just an instrument of Malekith’s will and his most dangerous weapon. Remaking one of his soldiers into something terrible, Kurse represented evil at its most frightening.
6 Ultron Was An Inhuman Killing Machine With A Grudge
Ultron was a frighteningly powerful villain who only wanted one thing: to completely destroy all biological life. The battle against him was one of the Avengers’ most desperate, and after it was done, the MCU would never be the same. Ultron tested the team to its limits and had a grudge against his creators, going to any lengths to destroy them.
Ultron was scary because he was implacable and inhuman; there was no negotiating with him and he only had one goal in mind, one he would do anything to achieve. He was a cunning and capable foe, endlessly frightening.
5 Ebony Maw’s Was Thanos’s Most Faithful & Sadistic Servant
The Black Order were Thanos’s most powerful servants and all of them were frightening in their own way. However, the one who was easily the scariest was Ebony Maw. Ebony Maw was a true believer; whereas the other members of the Order mostly just seemed like muscle, he was Thanos’s closest lieutenant, doing his master’s bidding with relish and believing in the Mad Titan’s goals.
Ebony Maw had no problem torturing Doctor Strange and his powers made him more than a match for just about anyone he faced. His fervor for Thanos’s goal made him much more terrifying than his fellows, and set him apart.
4 Red Skull’s Unreasoning Hate Makes Him Someone To Fear
The Nazis are some of the evilest villains ever and Hydra was the worst of the worst of the Third Reich. A big reason for that was because of their terrible leader, the Red Skull. Red Skull was the Reich’s most frightening servant; he didn’t care about collateral damages or lives lost as long as he and his twisted ideology won.
Red Skull was hatred made manifest and Cap ending his threat was the best thing that could happen for the Earth. If Red Skull has ever actually mastered the power of the Tesseract, the cost to the Earth and its people would have been immeasurable.
3 Hela Was A Killing Machine
Hela was the Goddess of Death and besides Odin, was the person most responsible for Asgard’s dominance of the Nine Worlds. Her skill in combat and amazing powers made her more than a match for entire armies and she was able to not only catch Mjolnir but destroy it. She conquered Asgard in seconds and it took the literal end of the Norse world to stop her.
Hela was one of the deadliest and most dangerous threats that Thor ever faced in his long life and that’s saying something. Anyone who can topple Asgard on their own is worthy of respect and fear.
2 Dormammu Is One Of the Most Dangerous Threats Ever
Dormammu is an all-powerful threat, one that Doctor Strange only defeated by outsmarting him. However, he only outsmarted him because he allowed Dormammu to kill him multiple times, a painful trial and error that was pretty much the only way to defeat the other-dimensional lord of darkness.
It’s doubtful that any force short of the assembled Infinity Stones would even phase Dormammu. Battling him would be futile—he has all the power and ruthlessness needed to triumph over any force. He’s an inhuman personification of evil and there is little anyone could do to stop him if he decided he didn’t want to be stopped.
1 Thanos Killed Half The Universe
Thanos is easily the most terrifying villain in the MCU because he did something no one else had done: he defeated the Avengers. He was able to assemble the Infinity Stones, beat on every hero that got in his way, then killed half the universe. He elevated himself into the Avengers’ arch-enemy in one attack and there’s few, if any, as successful as him.
No other villain has had as wide an impact or as high a body count, even if it was undone. His attack on the universe has left lasting scars and the fear he already engendered was added to immensely. Many villains talk about it, but Thanos was about it.
