WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Fear Street Part 1: 1994, now streaming on Netflix.
In Netflix’s Fear Street Part 1: 1994, seeing as it’s a trilogy, the film cleverly sets up key threads that jump back to the past with stories connected to the witch, Sarah Fier, still to come from 1666 and 1978. It’s why Deena (Kiana Madeira) and her crew don’t get a happy ending here, as they know there are more clues that need to be dissected to stop the curse swirling over Shadyside.
With that said, let’s analyze some of the biggest questions that haven’t been answered yet.
How Did the Witch Select Previous Avatars?
Sarah chooses the Skull Mask killer in ’94, the axe-murderer from Camp Nightwing in ’78 and Ruby Lane from ’65 as her slashers to hunt Deena and Sam down. But it’s because Sam accidentally desecrated her grave that she unleashes this new squad.
It leaves us wondering what the reason is for Sarah possessing the others before, including the pastor. It seemed as if it’s part of a vendetta against the town for burning her, but per Sam’s debacle, there might be more purpose to it. It’s also never revealed why Ryan’s chosen as the Skull Mask killer, which kicks off the string of events that leads to Sam being marked.
How Do The Slashers Choose Their Kills?
This is very fluid in the movie, especially with Sam’s case. Initially, it’s revealed that the slasher’s after her alone, but as the hunt progresses, they kill hospital workers that weren’t covered with Sam’s blood. Thus, we’d like to know who is deemed a viable target and why, especially when it comes to the other slashers over the centuries.
Sometimes it’s random, but again, when Sam gets possessed in the finale and Deena’s targeted, it feels more calculated. Sarah seems to have an emotional connection to various targets and who she wants to make her new avatars, so all this has to be revealed as it’s unlikely everyone desecrated her grave like Sam did in the opening act.
What Happened to the Witch’s Hand?
When Josh reveals insight into the curse after his extensive research over the years, it’s said that Sarah’s hand was cut off and is buried somewhere in the land that’d become Shadyside. We need to know how this hand was cut off and why, especially if she was hanged for heresy.
It might have even been self-inflicted. Either way, a missing limb should have been noticed by those that judged and executed the witch. Also, it’s a total mystery as to where exactly it’s buried or if someone’s recovered it, using her hand to keep Sarah’s essence going to maintain a dark, spiritual hold over the people inhabiting this land.
Who is the Hooded Villain at the End of Fear Street Part 1?
Despite Deena and her team’s heroics, Sam eventually gets possessed as we see a hooded villain performing a mysterious ritual. The names of previous slashers are carved into the cave as well, so we need to know who this person under the robe is.
It could be Sarah reborn, but it might also be her descendants or a cult of loyal disciples that are seeking revenge for her being savagely killed in 1666. This person is clearly being shaped as the dark overlord of the trilogy, so giving the impression that it’s the witch might be misdirection.
How Did C. Berman Survive?
When Josh finds out that C. Berman survived at Camp Nightwing, the team holds hope that Sam can be saved. Unfortunately, their call to Berman doesn’t get returned until the end. Deena and Josh eventually meet with Berman to discuss Sam being taken so we’d love to know how Berman survived her 1978 ordeal, which she admits took her sister.
Sam thought Berman died and was resuscitated, ergo why they came up with the overdose and revival plan for Sam. So that raises even more questions as to why Berman never became possessed herself as the witch would have been bitter that she escaped.
Where Are The Parents?
We learn that Deena’s dad is a drunk and he wasn’t present to help her in this film as he was working a double shift. Still, it’s weird that she and Josh wouldn’t go to him for help, so we’d love to know his history and why he’s not an option.
We also need to know why Sam didn’t ask them to go to her mom in Sunnyvale. Sure, the mom doesn’t like Deena and their relationship, but desperate times call for desperate measures. Sam’s dad is kept a mystery as well, other than her parents being divorced.
Why Did Deena Get Her Nosebleed?
When Deena’s about to toss the Gatorade cooler at Peter’s car early on, she hesitates as it could cause a crash and hurt Sam. Her nose starts bleeding, though, which Kate notices, and as Deena tends to it, the cooler slips out and causes Peter to drive into the forest.
We’d love to know why her nose bled as it doesn’t happen again. It could be more than coincidence as the witch may have had something to do with it. Fans are also speculating that as not much is revealed about Deena’s mom, maybe she’s tied to Sarah’s past, and thus the witch is influencing this moment.
What’s Sheriff Nick Hiding?
The Shadyside sheriff cuts a sinister figure, playing down the murders and avoiding helping Deena’s crew after they’re attacked. He later slips a note into someone’s home about the slew of murders happening again, so fans are eager to find out what Nick’s covering up.
It could be Berman’s house he visits but with Nick holding secrets, we just can’t say. Also, his brother, Will, is mayor over at Sunnyvale, the elite town that seemingly hates its Shadyside rivals, so it’d be interesting to discover what put them on different paths as there’s clearly an unspoken rift there.
Directed and co-written by Leigh Janiak, Fear Street stars Kiana Madeira, Olivia Welch, Benjamin Flores Jr., Darrell Britt-Gibson, Ashley Zukerman, Fred Hechinger, Julia Rehwald, Jeremy Ford and Gillian Jacobs. Part One: 1994 is now streaming on Netflix, followed by Part Two: 1978 on July 9 and Part Three: 1666 on July 16.
