New reports indicate that the rumored upcoming Dead Space game will be a remake of the first title and reboot the whole franchise.
According to GamesBeat journalist Jeff Grubb, the upcoming Dead Space game will take inspiration from Capcom‘s recent Resident Evil remakes. The game will likely incorporate several elements of the original title, including characters and setting, albeit with modern visuals and mechanics.
Grubb speculates that Capcom’s recent success with the Resident Evil franchise is what ultimately prompted publisher Electronic Arts to return to the Dead Space IP. While EA has shifted its focus towards more dedicated live-service games, such as FIFA: Ultimate Team, Apex Legends and Knockout City, the success of the single-player focused Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order may signal another shift in the publisher’s business model.
Rumors of a new Dead Space began in June when Grubb mentioned that Motive Studios, a developer owned by Electronic Arts, was working on a project that would revive an established IP. “We’re going to see it… if we’re not dead first,” teased Grubb. Fans began speculating that the specific use of the word “dead” was an indication that the project was a new Dead Space game.
Rumors were fuelled further when the Dead Space YouTube channel updated its profile picture after eight years of inactivity. While the icon used to display a logo for the Dead Space 3, which launched in 2013, the new image just appears to be an image of series’ protagonist Isaac Clarke’s iconic helmet.
Motive Studios is most known for developing 2020’s Star Wars: Squadrons. Patrick Klaus, general manager of Motive Studios, recently teased that the studio was developing a selection of new games, stating, “… we’re also working on several unannounced projects. Innovation is tough, but it’s also exciting and energizing.”
The original Dead Space released in 2008 to universal praise. The sci-fi survival-horror game placed players in the heavy boots of Isaac Clarke, an engineer tasked with surviving upon the Ishimura, a derelict space station overrun by horrific creatures known as Necromorphs. The game drew heavy inspiration from Resident Evil 4, which in turn also provide a foundation for the recent Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis remakes.
The Dead Space franchise has long been dormant after EA terminated its development studio, Visceral Games, in 2017. This followed the disappointing reception and performance of Dead Space 3. The third mainline entry in the franchise is widely disliked by fans for its excessive use of microtransactions and shift away from horror to more action-adventure themes.
