John Cena’s worlds collide when his castmates (and his director) from the upcoming film The Suicide Squad, join him on Wipeout, the TBS competition show that he hosts with Nicole Byer and Camille Kostek for a special Suicide Squad-themed edition of the game show.
Wipeout is an obstacle course themed reality competition where contestants compete to see who can clear the course and who will “wipeout” and be sent flying to the waters below the course. The winners receive $25,000. The show originated on ABC back in 2008, when it was a surprise hit, and Cena, Byer and Kostek have hosted the revival on CBS since earlier this year (the first season of ten episodes ended in early June).
On August 1st, four of Cena’s co-stars from The Suicide Squad, namely Nathan Fillion, Joel Kinnaman, David Dastmalchian, and Daniela Melchior, will show up to cheer on and give advice to the teams that are competing for the prize. That, of course, is just five days before The Suicide Squad opens in movie theaters and on demand on HBO Max.
This is part of a whole weekend’s worth of cross-promotional Suicide Squad appearances on others shows on WarnerMedia’s TV networks (such as TBS, TNT and TruTV). The weekend is being hyped as ” Summer With Your Squad.”
In the commercial for the episode, Cena is dressed in his Peacemaker costume from the film and Byer introduces herself as Margot Robbie.
Later, when James Gunn shows up, Gunn jokes that he is there because they really need Cena to give the costume back before it gets slimed (“Or whatever you do on this show”).
Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Michael Rooker as Savant, Flula Borg as Javelin, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Mayling NG as Mongal, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Alice Braga as Solsoria, Sylvester Stallone as King Shark, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Nathan Fillion as TDK, Sean Gunn as Weasel, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang and John Cena as Peacemaker, with Steve Agee, Taika Waititi and Storm Reid. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max Aug. 6.
