During E3 2021, one of the surprises of the show was the sudden appearance of a title based on Marvel’s cosmic super-team the Guardians of the Galaxy. Square-Enix’s show left much to be desired overall, but they had a strong opening when they introduced this game, which takes the Guardians on an entirely new journey.
But while they showed nearly twenty minutes of gameplay in the game’s initial reveal (something many argue was overkill), there were still plenty of questions remaining both for those who paid attention and those who didn’t. Chief of those is something asked of most games these days: Will players be able to enjoy this title with their friends?
10 Does Guardians Have Multiplayer? No, It’s Only A Single-Player Game
When it comes to team-focused games, generally fans make the assumption that it should be a multiplayer co-op title. While many fans weren’t exactly fond of Marvel’s Avengers’ “games as a service” focus, people still wanted to try out the game for the multiplayer element in the hopes that it would be fun to play with friends.
Fans looking for that here are going to be disappointed. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is designed as a single-player title, meaning any plans of playing Rocket & Groot together with a buddy are done for now.
9 Can You Control Other Characters Besides Star-Lord? He’s The Only Playable Character, But Other Characters Can Be Called In For Special Moves
When fans see a team of characters, they generally want to play as everyone. But the initial reveal of this game made it seem as if the primary playable character would be the Guardians’ team leader, Star Lord. And that’s exactly how things turned out, too. Rather than being able to freely switch between all the characters whenever they want, the player is instead firmly placed in the role of Peter Quill.
This gave the team the chance to develop one character’s move-set to be unique, which is why the character gets to jet around and use his element guns on enemies. However, the player is able to direct the other characters for special assist moves and do combo moves for extra damage.
8 What’s The Roster? It Features The Five Members From The Original MCU Movie
Though fans will only have access to Star-Lord as far as playing the game, the game is still a team-based title so it’s hard not to wonder who the cast is going to be. Unsurprisingly, the primary cast of the game involves the classic team from the Marvel films.
Star-Lord remains the team’s smart-mouthed leader. Drax is still the team muscle. Gamora is still the Deadliest Woman in the Galaxy and in this world seems to have signed a contract to work with them. Rocket Raccoon and Groot appear to be long-time friends that have fallen in with the rest of them. Still, a roster of five is certainly a strong start.
7 What Studio Is Developing The Game? It’s Developed By Eidos Montreal
It’s hard not to wonder what studio is in charge of a game’s development when it’s announced. That doesn’t just go for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, but for any game. Marvel’s Avengers was developed by Crystal Dynamics, who was best known for their work on the Tomb Raider reboots.
This Guardians of the Galaxy game is being developed by Eidos Montreal, who previously helped on Marvel’s Avengers and before that was known for their work on the Deus Ex titles, a series of sci-fi stealth games that took place in a cyberpunk society.
6 When Does The Game Come Out? It’s Currently Planned Release Date Is October 26th
One of the most surprising things about this game being revealed is that its launch date is so close. Most Square-Enix games are announced so far ahead of time fans joke it’ll be a decade before they actually see the game’s release— Final Fantasy XV had been announced so long before its eventual release that it was originally planned as a side-game to Final Fantasy XIII.
Even Marvel’s Avengers was announced back in 2017, but fans didn’t see it until E3 2019 and the game didn’t release until Summer 2020. But Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has been in development just as long according to the rumors, and will be releasing October 26th, 2021 if all goes according to plan.
5 Are Other Guardians In The Game? Unconfirmed, But The Developers Have Hinted As Much
Long-time fans of the Guardians are already aware that they’ve always had a massive team to work with, with the franchise having a counterpart in the future as well. The films have only assigned characters like Cosmo and Mantis to the team, but the comics have had tons of people join over the years. The team started out as a way to combat the dangers in the galaxy and as such many heroes tried to help them out.
The developers have hinted that other Guardians members might be available to join the team, but they haven’t gone into detail. Hopefully some of the comic classic versions will be about to join up.
4 What Platforms Will It Be Available For? It Is Coming To All The Major Consoles Plus PC
When games with mass appeal like this are announced, there’s always one question that’s at the front of everyone’s mind: What’s it going to be on? Well, this time around fans don’t have to worry as the game will be available for most any platform a gamer might have,
Guardians of the Galaxy will be releasing on both last- and current- gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles as well PC, but most surprisingly it’ll also be available on the Nintendo Switch. However, it should be noted that it’ll only be available for the Switch by way of the cloud, meaning Switch users will have to stream the game over the internet rather than be able to play it directly from the console, previously seen with games like Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey and Resident Evil 7.
3 Is It Based On The MCU Or On The Comics? It Exists Within Its Own Canon That Combines Elements Of Both
Eidos Montreal has been asked by multiple outlets whether this game will be more like the more comedic Marvel Cinematic Universe films or more like the more serious comic books.
According to them, they were given complete freedom to take from the comic books and the cartoons, allowing them to pick and choose with respect to building a new canon. However, from the looks of things the game absolutely seems to take after the films more than the comics.
2 What’s The Basic Story Of The Game? The Guardians Are Trying Fix A Mistake That Could Destroy The Galaxy
What’s this adventure about? The trailer shows the Guardians trying to scrounge up some money as quickly as possible, but that’s not what the game is about. The game takes place a short while after a giant intergalactic war, with the Guardians trying to take advantage of the situation (essentially the opposite of how they formed in the comics), until they wind up causing an accident that could wind up destroying the galaxy if they’re not careful.
Other hints have implied that the group will be fighting against the long-time Guardian foes the Universal Church of Truth, but this isn’t confirmed yet.
1 Will There Be Other Costumes? There Will Be Dozens Of Costumes Available, Including Comic Costumes
Fans of any property with extensive lore like the Guardians of the Galaxy will always wonder if they’ll be stuck in the game’s main costumes? It’s a valid question, considering across the comics and films there’s no shortage of costumes that could be used.
Not to worry though, as players will be able to find nearly 40 different outfits in the game during their playthroughs. And for long-time comic book fans, they’ll be able to put the characters in their classic outfits via the Throwback Guardians pack which comes with a pre-order for the title.
