Dexter: John Lithgow Returns for Showtime Revival | CBR

John Lithgow will be making a return to his role as the Trinity Killer in Showtime’s revival of Dexter.

Deadline reported that the Oscar-nominated actor is gearing up to reprise his portrayal of the homicidal Arthur Mitchell in the limited series, having just completed his work on the first season of HBO’s remake of Perry Mason.

Making his debut as Mitchell in the Season 4 premiere of Dexter, Lithgow’s character was killed off by Michael C. Hall’s Dexter Morgan in “The Getaway,” the final episode of that season on Showtime. While it remains unclear just how the presumably deceased serial murderer will manage to make a comeback, it is being reported the writers of the show “have concocted a pathway for the Trinity Killer to come back that works within the larger Dexter narrative.” Lithgow is expected to be on set within the next couple of weeks, with his part needing only about a day of filming in Los Angeles.

Announced in October 2020, Showtime’s 10-episode limited series began filming last February with Clyde Phillips as showrunner. As Dexter‘s Season 8 reached its conclusion back in September of 2013, some have dubbed the upcoming revival Season 9. Teasers for the Dexter revival have provided glimpses of the titular character’s new identity, profession and home state. Apparently going by “Jim Lindsay” and working as a sales associate for a fish and game supply company, Hall’s sympathetic serial killer has appeared to move from Florida to Oregon. The fresh setting may enhance the opportunity for Phillips to create a “second finale” for Dexter, which started strong but its last four seasons received lukewarm reviews from critics and fans alike.

“We want this to not be Dexter Season 9,” Phillips said. “Ten years, or however many years, have passed by the time this will air, and the show will reflect that time passage. So far as the ending of the show, this will have no resemblance to how the original finale was.” With such a temporal gap between Dexter faking his own death in the original series finale and the events of the new Dexter, writers will have a rich backstory to fill in for Lithgow’s Mitchell, who was beaten with a hammer when he was last seen. Immediately a fan-favorite, Mitchell became a worthy opponent for Dexter, who fixated on the unassuming family man and finally killed him at the end of Season 4, or so viewers were led to believe. Having won six Emmys (including one for Dexter), two Golden Globes and a slew of other awards, Lithgow is undoubtedly a welcome addition to the ongoing production.

Created by Clyde Phillips, Dexter stars Michael C. Hall, Clancy Brown, Julia Jones, Alano Miller, Jamie Chung, Johnny Sequoyah and Jack Alcott. Showtime’s revival series has yet to receive a premiere date.
