Patty Jenkins’ upcoming Star Wars movie Rogue Squadron has found its writer.
According to THR, the script to Rogue Squadron is being penned by Matthew Robinson, whose credits include The Invention of Lying, Love and Monsters and the upcoming Little Shop of Horrors remake.
Announced during the Disney Investor Day 2020 presentation, Rogue Squadron will center on the eponymous faction of Rebel Alliance fighter pilots. First seen during the Battle of Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back (then known as Rogue Group), Rogue Squadron would eventually go on to headline a number of multimedia titles in the now-defunct Expanded Universe, from video games to comics to the widely popular Star Wars: X-Wing novel series by Michael A. Stackpole and Aaron Allston. The group — whose name was retconned to be an homage to the heroes of Rogue One — famously included the likes of Luke Skywalker, included the likes of Wedge Antilles and Hobbie Klivian.
“I love to move fast and speed of any kind,” Jenkins said when the film was announced. “I think that that’s because I grew up the daughter of a great fighter pilot and every day I would wake up and go outside and look up and see my father and his squadron taking off in their F4s, whirring across the sky, and it was the most thrilling thing I still have experienced in my entire life. So when he lost his life in service to this country, it ignited a desire in me to turn all of that tragedy and thrill into one day making the greatest fighter pilot movie of all time.”
Directed by Patty Jenkins, Rogue Squadron arrives in theaters Dec. 22, 2023.
