GOG Summer Sale’s Best Deals | CBR

What is summer without sun, beaches and massive game sales? Like Steam, Good Old Games or GOG has its own sales throughout the year, with summer being one of the big ones. Big and small titles alike get great discounts, and you may occasionally even get a free game just for visiting the online store.

GOG is mainly known for having classic or somewhat obscure titles on its platform, but over the years it’s been acquiring a good amount of new triple-A titles (thanks largely in part to being owned by Polish game developer CD Projekt, whose studio CD Projekt Red is responsible for The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077) as well as a ton of indie games. Indie games are usually less expensive to get a hold of so for the most part, the deals on this list are for full-priced, big-name titles that you can snag for a good deal right now.

The Witcher 3 – Game of the Year Edition

By now most people have probably played the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but if you haven’t it’s a good time to give it a go – even if you’re uncertain. The Witcher 3 is the third game in the trilogy following the story of Geralt of Rivia. In this one, he’s tracking down his pseudo daughter, Ciri, who is in danger from the Wild Hunt once again. The world is in turmoil as the southern empire of Nilfgaard is invading the Northern Kingdoms and the world is still full of monsters and other insidious things Geralt will crash against. Right now, the Game of the Year edition is on sale at 85% off; at less than $20, this deal is a huge bargain, especially considering the Blood and Wine expansion is an entire game of its own with all the content.

Control: Ultimate Edition

Jesse flying and tossing an enemy

Control, which quietly released just last year, follows a woman named Jesse as she fights a presence from another dimension that’s invaded the Federal Bureau of Control – a government agency dedicated to studying and harnessing the supernatural. Jesse has some cool powers of her own like telekinesis, the ability to fly in certain situations and even comes with an array of unique firearms designed to take out the invading forces. It’s a fun new title, and the Ultimate Edition includes all DLC and extra content, which includes more than a few great nods to Alan Wake. Control is a triple-A title that deserves its cult following, but at 60% it should garner significantly more interest.

Divinity: Original Sin 2

Combat and magic in Divinity Original Sin 2

Divinity: Original Sin 2 came out almost five years ago but it’s still a really good RPG to play that rarely goes on sale, which just makes its massive discount on GOG this weekend all the more impressive. The added bonus is that this game can be played multiplayer if a friend has a copy or online with anyone running a campaign or playing the main story. The game follows a hero on a journey to become the next Divine but danger seems to follow you everywhere as creatures from the Void relentlessly attack and make a mess of the world. To make it worse, you’re considered a dangerous criminal and there’s a crusade against you. The Definitive Edition is currently 60% off but the Divine and Eternal editions, which include additional content like art books, soundtracks, other Divinity games, are also on sale at 45% off. You can’t really go wrong with either pick.

Everspace

Firing the Railgun in Everspace

A gorgeous indie game that has you exploring space at your leisure, salvaging wrecks, mining comets and meteors and getting into space battles from the cockpit. It’s a fun take on sci-fi, ship-based adventures with similar roguelike mechanics akin to Dead Cells or Hades. When your ship explodes, you get to use the materials found to buy new ships, improve them and level up skills to make your next run better. There is a story to be experienced, too, alongside the beautiful and randomly generated maps that will have you asking questions. Everspace is a calming but sometimes intense game that’s a blast to play and right now, it’s on sale on GOG at 85% off.

Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition

The Sony fan-favorite Horizon Zero Dawn had a rocky start on PC, but today the version is one many players are enjoying. Players are thrust into the role of Aloy, a woman in a seemingly wild world with massive technological beasts that threaten civilization and mysterious tech from a civilization long gone. As a child, Aloy was an outcast but through the use of this technology, she becomes begrudgingly accepted by her tribe and she sets out to discover the secrets of her world, fighting mechanical beasts in her quest to find out who she is. Horizon Zero Dawn has fantasy and modern sci-fi elements that are woven in a powerful, emotional tale that complements hours of stealth and action gameplay. The Complete Edition comes with the game’s DLC expansion, The Frozen Wilds, and is a steak at 45% off, especially if you’re getting ready for the upcoming sequel.
