Work on the upcoming Disney+ show Star Wars: The Acolyte may start as early as next year.
According to a report by Discussing Film, Lucasfilm wants to start The Acolyte‘s production in London around Feb. 2022, with Leslye Headland (Russian Doll) working as showrunner. Given this location, The Acolyte may use a version of ‘The Volume’ — the massive LED panel room used to bring The Mandalorian to life — in London’s Pinewood Studios to film the series.
Alongside Headland, it was announced in December that Lucasfilm’s Rayne Roberts had joined The Acolyte as a co-developer. Character details currently remain unknown, though Discussing Film also reported that Lucasfilm wants a woman of color to play the show’s protagonist.
In terms of story, The Acolyte has been described as “a mystery-thriller that will take the audience into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark side powers in the final days of the High Republic era,” with the titular High Republic period currently being explored through multiple books and comics from Marvel and IDW Publishing.
Currently, Disney+’s only running Star Wars show is The Bad Batch, an animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars spinoff that follows the members of Clone Force 99 as fugitives from the Empire. Another spinoff set to release this year is The Book of Boba Fett, which was announced in a post-credit scene for The Mandalorian‘s Season 2 finale. Production on The Book of Boba Fett recently concluded this month, with Boba Fett actor Temuera Morrison and his co-star Ming-Na Wen confirming the news to various outlets. Wen, who plays bounty hunter Fennec Shand, also reprised her role on The Bad Batch as a younger version of Shand trying to retrieve the clone Omega from Clone Force 99.
The Acolyte is currently in development for Disney+ from Leslye Headland and Rayne Roberts. The Star Wars television series does not yet have a release date.
