The upcoming Netflix animated series Sonic Prime will show Sonic the Hedgehog traversing parallel universes, according to a series of images that were leaked from a concept artist’s portfolio on Artstation.
Initially pointed out by Twitter user Tails’ Channel, the concept art depicts the Blue Blur traveling through alternate realities. Many of the provided images depict a futuristic urban dystopia, but there are also hints at a jungle-themed world and a pirate universe. While the concept artist in question has since deleted their Artstation portfolio, these images have broken free and been circulating the Internet since.
In several of the images, Sonic seems confused and lost, which indicates a Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse-style multiverse dilemma. While there doesn’t seem to be any indication of alternate versions of Sonic himself, multiple supporting characters make appearances as multiverse copies of themselves. The art depicts a spear-wielding Amy Rose stalking through a thick jungle, a curious Miles “Tails” Prower under the scrutiny of Sonic and a whole slew of alternate Dr. Robotniks, who look to represent the mad scientist through at least five different ages. Additionally, through a wormhole shown in one of the images, a pirate flag depicting a skull that resembles that of Knuckles the Echidna can be seen, hinting that other characters are set to make an appearance in one way or another.
While fans have known for some time that the upcoming series would depict “a strange new multiverse,” the leaked images give viewers a better idea of what exactly this so-called “Shatterverse” will look like. Furthermore, the confirmation that alternate versions of the characters (several, in the case of Dr. Eggman, who has infant, teenaged, adult and elderly counterparts backing him up) will make appearances promises conflict and interaction in a unique and interesting way, similarly to Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
While it’s too early to make any concrete observations yet, the leaked images seem to indicate that at least four parallel universes will be traversed over the course of the series, and their “shattered” design calls into question whether the characters will be hopping between them willingly. However, this doesn’t seem to phase Sonic too much, as one of the included images shows him dancing with an “L” on his forehead, surrounded by dozens of Eggman’s busted bots, and another shows him victorious over all five eras of Eggman, all of whom are dazed and defeated.
Sonic Prime arrives on Netflix in 2022.
