One Piece: 10 Ways The World Map Has Changed Since The Start Of The Series

While other series may simply try to explore progressive plots or stick to formulas, One Piece has its main characters explore new and strange lands during every arc. They’re not just learning new cultures and customs but expanding but upon the understood geography of how the world looks and works.

None could foresee from day one how Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hats would have adventures on oceans in the sky, countries on the back of giant elephants, and islands that are frozen and burning at the same time. The world map has not only become more detailed, but it has entrenched upon strange, new worlds no one thought it would ever cross.

10 The World Is Now Divided Into The Four Blues

Little East Blue

One of the most interesting things about One Piece‘s basic world map is how it neatly cuts into different quadrants. While the Grand Line is the center of most of the story, the rest of the Blue Sea houses most of the world and is divided by the Red Line and Calm Belts into the East Blue, West Blue, North Blue, and South Blue.

It is apparently a rarity for any of these regions to consistently interact given how long and treacherous of a voyage it would be to cross the Grand Line. This is best pointed out in Sanji’s backstory, where it took his family’s living, climbing country to scale the Red Line.

9 The Calm Belt Keeps The Straw Hats From Detouring

For the uninitiated, it may seem obvious to cross the Calm Belts to better navigate across the world instead of just racing linearly through the Grand Line. However, Eiichiro Oda lets the audience know in no uncertain terms that crossing the Calm Belt is a very bad idea (not that bad ideas would ever discourage Monkey D. Luffy).

The Calm Belt mysteriously has no winds or currents of its own, hence its name. This means that most ships wouldn’t be able to cross. However, what deters even motorized ships and the bravest of adventurers are the scores of island-sized, Sea Kings that inhabit the Calm Belt.

8 The Red Line Divides The Entire World

The Red Line is the world map’s most distinctive feature and is currently One Piece‘s only continent. While taking shortcuts was never part of Luffy’s plan, it became apparent as soon as he approached the Grand Line that he and his crew wouldn’t be able to cross its impenetrable rocks or its 10,000-meter height.

The Red Line has one intersection with the Grand Line that acts as an entranceway for most travelers called the Reverse Mountains and another intersection that houses One Piece‘s most elite rulers called Mary Geoise and acts as a tollway into the New World.

7 Sky Islands Add Another Dimension To The Map

One Piece was supposed to end after the Alabasta Arc, but Eiichiro Oda famously kept writing just because he was having a good time. However, that did mean that his story had to go through somewhat of a transitionary phase so that he could find his footing for future stories.

That transitionary phase was likely the Skypeia Arc, a story that brought new possibilities to the story as well as a literal new dimension to the world map. Here, the Straw Hats discovered the Sky Islands and the Sky Ocean, an entire world in the sky. Because of how difficult it is to travel there, most people down below don’t even know that it exists, let alone are able to add it to their charters.

6 Space Will Likely Be The Last Frontier

One Piece doesn’t talk about space that much, and as a fantasy series that already involves zombies and giant robots, that may be a smart move to keep the story from getting too convoluted. However, some parts of the story have already touched on how different even One Piece‘s solar system may be from the real world.

In the aftermath of the Skypeia Arc, Enel and his manga cover story explored the strange world of aliens and robots living on the moon. In the brief glimpses of Ohara, fans were able to see a model of One Piece‘s planet and the six satellites that orbit it. While the Straw Hats are still far from space travel, it’s hard not to think that there’s something to look forward to in the stars.

5 Fishman Island Hides Below The Sea

Fishman Island

When One Piece started, it was already pretty fantastical. It had magical fruits that could grand superpowers, giant monsters hiding in the waters, and a guy with a natural, red clown nose. However, the story really started testing people’s imaginations when Luffy and his friends reached Cocoyasi Village and faced their biggest threat yet — Arlong and his group of fishmen.

This was the series’ first taste of greater, more intimidating creatures along the Grand Line as well as the idea of a Fishman Island. It wouldn’t be until after the Skypeia Arc that the Straw Hats would really start targeting the world below and after the time-skip that they’d actually see it for all its glory (and all of its terror).

4 Tequila Wolf’s Bridge May Change How Islands Connect

As part of Nico Robin’s travels during her time-skip training arc, she discovered Tequila Wolf, an entire community that’s been forced to build a massive bridge to connect the world’s islands. The project has apparently taken more than 700 years, and the workers have had to build towns and campsites along the bridge to keep building it.

Currently, it’s unknown why and how well the bridge will actually connect communities and if it will continue to be built in the future, especially given the fact that the Sea Trains aim to do the same thing but faster.

3 Living Islands Literally Keep Shifting The Map

If a cartographer such as Nami truly wants to draw an accurate depiction of every country and community within the One Piece world, they have a lot of work ahead of them given that some islands and countries literally move. The first instance of this that was shown was Zou, aka Zunesha, a giant elephant that houses the Mink tribe and their ancient kingdom.

Zunesha has hinted that they are being forced to wander the world as punishment, though it’s unknown as to why and if there are others like them. The other instance of moving islands is a little more organized and artificial. That would be the Germa Kingdom, an advanced society built on the backs of giant snails that are able to traverse even the Red Line and interlock to form a whole country.

2 Oars & His Ancestors Have The Power To Change The Map

Oars the Continent-Puller

One Piece already seemed massive enough when it introduced giants in Little Garden. However, Oda just had to go and one-up himself by introducing supergiants (or whatever he wants to call what Oars and his family are). Oars is considered a giant even among giants and a terrifying villain who, alongside some cohorts, tried to control and horde the world itself.

This is frighteningly hinted at by his moniker as “the Continent Puller.” Taking this name seriously, it seems as if Oars and his family have the strength to literally rearrange the world, meaning the world map could keep changing thanks to them.

1 The New World Is Entirely New Territory

The Final Island in One Piece

Perhaps the most exciting feature of One Piece‘s world for aspiring adventurers and cartographers is the New World. This is the second half of the Grand Line found across from Mary Geoise and is comprised of islands and sea that most people haven’t explored or even added to the world map, hence the name “New World.”

A huge part of Gol D. Roger’s notoriety is the fact that he and his crew are seemingly the only people who have reached the ends of the New World and learned its secrets. It’s now up to the Straw Hats to learn more about what the New World has to offer and what lies on the final island, Laugh Tale.
