A Quiet Place II Director John Krasinksi on Passing the Torch

A Quiet Place is returning for a third installment, and John Krasinski believes there was no one better to take the reins than Jeff Nichols.

In an interview with Empire, Krasinski, who wrote and directed the first two films, talked about what it was like to hand over creative control of the third movie. “I came up with the idea. The story of the third one, the third installment, is something I came up with,” he explains. “Truly the only person I had in mind when asked whether I would hand this off was Jeff [Nichols].”

I think he’s one of the best filmmakers, Mud is one of my favorite movies, and so real and intimate,” Krasinski continued. “It’s exactly the sort of paints we’re painting with in A Quiet Place – very organic characters you fall in love with. So he was my first choice for this, and when he said yes I was over the moon. I pitched him my story, he’s gone and developed the world on his own with that jumping-off point, and I’m so thrilled. He’s actually just turning in a script now, and I loved it. I absolutely loved it, and I can’t wait to see him shoot this thing.”

The upcoming installment was originally announced in November 2020, though Krasinski had mentioned having ideas for a third movie back in March of the same year. The writer-director had even preemptively put hints to a potential third entry in A Quiet Place: Part II. “We even went so far as to put in a couple Easter eggs, so that if I did do a third one, they would connect back to the second one,” Krasinski said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

When asked whether the upcoming entry would be a sequel or a spin-off, Krasinski answered vaguely. “Is it going to continue the Abbotts? Who knows!” he answered. “No, I will tell you that it is… I’m really excited about the third installment because it’s going to do something that we haven’t done before.”

He went on to discuss the consequences of the A Quiet Place: Part II‘s final scenes. “The ending of the last shot is, now that the world knows about [the signal that the creatures are vulnerable to], what will the world do with this answer, or with this weapon? Will they be responsible with it, or will they not be responsible with it?” Fans may find out in the Nichols-directed third installment.

Written and directed by John Krasinski, A Quiet Place Part II stars Emily Blunt, Djimon Hounsou, Noah Jupe, Millicent Simmonds and Cillian Murphy. The film is now playing in theaters.
