Resident Evil Village: 5 Possibilities for the DLC | CBR

During its E3 2021 presentation, Capcom announced that DLC was in development for Resident Evil Village. This is new content is due to fan demand. As such, this news naturally delighted many in the game’s community and has left fans wondering what exactly this new DLC could entail.

Capcom could undoubtedly surprise the industry with a completely out of left field expansion concept. However, there are a few possibilities that seem exceedingly likely. Here are five of the most talked-about, realistic and interesting possibilities for Village‘s DLC releases.

A Cooperative Mercenaries Mode

The return of The Mercenaries was celebrated by fans when it was announced to be included within Village. This version of the game mode is enjoyable, but not without issues. One distinct possibility is that DLC for the title could include some form of Mercenaries mode boasting many fan-requested features including cooperative play.

Cooperative Mercenaries is one of the most beloved features of Resident Evil 5, and even the much-maligned Resident Evil 6. Adding the feature to Village would undoubtedly improve the game’s longevity and garner fan goodwill. In addition, the update could add a more traditional Mercenaries experience as well as additional maps and weapons. Many fans would much rather this cooperative mode arrive as a free DLC update for the main game as opposed to paying for the privilege, however.

Banned Footage-like Standalone Experiences

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard received the Banned Footage add-ons as part of its DLC offerings. The Banned Footage packs included standalone experiences, mini-games and other smaller pieces of content grouped together into two different packs. These releases contained some truly memorable slices of gameplay, including the Bedroom DLC, in which players must explore a room while ensuring that it looks untouched every time the terrifying Marguerite Baker returns.

Village could very well receive the Banned Footage treatment, providing vertical slices of the different lords’ territories or even allowing players to take control of them. This format also allows for more intense and finely crafted horror sections, perhaps a series of hallucination-based challenges akin to the disturbing House Beneviento or a small story following one of Heisenberg’s experiments attempting to escape his factory.

A Prequel Tale

When Ethan Winters arrives at the titular village at the start of the game, the few remaining residents are in hiding as they desperately try to survive the dangers lurking outside. The fall of the village has already occurred and the player is left to view the remnants of what once was. A more meaty add-on for the game could be a prequel storyline detailing exactly how the village fell.

Seeing the decrepit and haunting areas of the village that the player has come to know so well as a thriving community would be a fascinating experience. The prequel would likely follow characters that only briefly appear in the main game such as Luiza and Elena, further fleshing out characters that didn’t get much time to shine.

A Chris Redfield-Focused Side Story

Chris Redfield appears sporadically throughout Village‘s storyline alongside his Hound Wolf Squad. It is ultimately revealed that Chris and his team have been searching for Rose and hunting Miranda, while attempting to keep Ethan in the dark. A side story in which players take control of Chris and explore exactly what Hound Wolf Squad was up to during the events of the game would be an excellent way to re-use assets while telling a unique story that gives players a new perspective on the main plot.

While some would likely prefer a follow-up on the game’s ending as Chris takes aim at the BSAA, this is far more likely to be followed up in the already in-development Resident Evil 9. The side story angle gives players more of Redfield, as well as the rest of his squad without compromising Capcom’s vision for the sequel.

Rose’s Future

Resident Evil 8 Rose Winters Ending

Village‘s post-credits scene depicts a now-adult Rose visiting her father’s grave. Rose has seemingly been trained by Chris Redfield and is working for some form of anti-bioterrorism organization. Following up on this tease is a no-brainer, and something Capcom is very likely to do in the future. This plot will likely be continued through DLC as opposed to Resident Evil 9 as Capcom is unlikely to want such a large time skip to occur since it would age other iconic characters too much.

The exact route that Rose’s arc would take is up in the air. This DLC could adopt a more action-oriented direction showcasing some of Rose’s immense Mold powers or a much more horror-focused experience as players follow a rookie Rose not yet able to deal with the threats of BOWs. This direction is ripe with potential and remains possibly the most likely direction for Village‘s DLC.
