Social media has been having a field day with the news that a controversial sex scene between Batman and Catwoman was cut from the third season of Harley Quinn on HBO Max and now former Batman actor Val Kilmer has weighed in on the controversy himself.
Kilmer used a scene from his hit 1995 film, Batman Forever, where Kilmer played the Dark Knight, who was romancing psychologist Dr. Chase Meridian (played by Nicole Kidman), to give his view on the controversy.
The star, who is helping to celebrate the 26th anniversary of Batman Forever today, posted on Twitter, “Does he or doesn’t he…?”
This is a reference to Harley Quinn co-showrunner Justin Halpern revealing that there was a scene cut from the show’s third season where Batman was performing a sex act on Catwoman, “It’s incredibly gratifying and free to be using characters that are considered villains because you just have so much more leeway. A perfect example of that is in this third season of Harley [when] we had a moment where Batman was going down on Catwoman. And DC was like, ‘You can’t do that. You absolutely cannot do that.’ They’re like, ‘Heroes don’t do that.’ So, we said, ‘Are you saying heroes are just selfish lovers?’ They were like, ‘No, it’s that we sell consumer toys for heroes. It’s hard to sell a toy if Batman is also going down on someone.'”
Kilmer then also shared a clip from Batman Forever where Batman and Chase Meridian are having some playful sexual banter.
Dr. Chase Meridian: Pity I can’t see behind the mask.
Batman: We all wear masks.
M: My life’s an open book. You read?
B: I don’t blend in at a family picnic.
M: Oh, we could give it a try. I’ll bring the wine, you bring your scarred psyche.
B: [Chase removes her coat, revealing a sexy black dress] Direct, aren’t you?
M: You like strong women. I’ve done my homework. Or do I need skin-tight vinyl and a whip?
B: I haven’t had that much luck with women.
M: Maybe you just haven’t met the right woman.
Then they’re about to kiss when Gordon interrupts them. So it seems like Kilmer thinks that Batman would be willing to do the act that the Harley Quinn series would not allow.
