WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Superman & Lois Season 1, Episode 9, “Loyal Subjects,” which aired Tuesday on The CW.
One of the big things Superman & Lois shocked fans and Clark Kent with was the revelation of Section 7734. General Sam Lane had this secret unit in the Department of Defense working on kryptonite weapons in case the Man of Steel went rogue. Recently, its potency has been shown with green gas hurting the Kryptonian and proving to have long-lasting effects. However, the latest episode confirms the program holds another unforeseen and catastrophic danger for the hero.
This comes via the military workers under Sam who knows the identity of Superman and that he is indeed the patriarch of the Kent family. While it’s never said outright, and we’ve not seen any soldiers acknowledging it, it’s clear they know, which is dangerous.
Sam has his core of faithful servants, but even to those who aren’t explicitly told the truth, they’ve likely overheard some major clues. Sam’s often speaking on the phone to Superman, mentioning the Super Sons, thus revealing that Kal-El has a family. More so, the Kents have been attacked by Morgan Edge’s X-Kryptonite warriors on a few occasions, and after the recent assault by Emily and Kyle, they’re stationed at the farm once more. It’s not difficult to reconcile the obvious at this point, with the common denominators of the Kents.
Given that Jon used the Stranger’s weapon against the villains, it’s clear the Stranger’s RV was being dissected by Lois and Superman. It stands to reason Sam would have people tracking Superman too, as they already built comms for him. As a result, a 7734 worker would have to be dumb to not know the truth.
One soldier already infiltrated for Edge, proving spies can discern the truth for nefarious purposes. This means personnel could be bribed by someone like Lex Luthor or Edge. Some might also sell out Superman if they lose faith in the cause, even going to the media. Meanwhile, others could steal weapons in the name of patriotism.
After all, Sam’s fearful the Stranger’s reality will become theirs with Kryptonians trying to take over, but amid his paranoia, so many people knowing who Kal-El is has become an even worse notion as the gas has led to a virus in Clark’s system. He’s weak, and Sam’s science team knows it has harmed Jordan too. Thus, 7734 itself has become a risk Sam never saw coming, and sadly, as much as he tried to save the world and his family, the general might have doomed both.
Superman & Lois stars Tyler Hoechlin, Elizabeth Tulloch, Dylan Walsh, Alex Garfin, Jordan Elsass, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Inde Navarrette and Wolé Parks. The series airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
