Thor is one of the “Big Three” in the Marvel Universe alongside Captain America and Iron Man. Together, these three were at the top of the Avengers lineup and considered the foundational members of the team. Thor is one of the most iconic Avengers members of all time despite long periods of absence from the lineup.
Despite that, Thor has his detractors among the hero community. There are other heroes in the Marvel Universe who just can’t stand the God of Thunder for one reason or another. That’s before even mentioning the villains who would see Thor dead at the first given chance.
10 Thor Often Mocks The Black Knight These Days And Dane Doesn’t Appreciate It
The Black Knight was a longtime Avenger who served for a time starting in the 1980s. He never served alongside Thor except on large-scale crossover events. Dane Whitman did often have an inferiority complex in regards to his part on the Avengers, but Thor has only exacerbated it.
In the recent Black Knight: Curse of the Ebony Blade miniseries by Si Spurrier and Sergio Davila, Thor is seen frequently chastising the Black Knight. Whitman finally snapped back eventually, and Thor demeaned Dane for his inability to master the Ebony Blade. Dane didn’t take kindly to this treatment and snapped back.
9 Cyclops Doesn’t Trust Any Of The Avengers
Cyclops of the X-Men has become a reliable detractor of the Avengers. In Scott’s perception, the Avengers have had every opportunity to stand up for the mutants and failed to do so every time. This came to a head in Avengers VS X-Men, but the friction has died down very little in the years since.
Cyclops has aimed most of his ire at Captain America as the leader of the Avengers, but his resentment towards the rest of the team, Thor included, hasn’t been hidden.
8 Ares Thought The Superhero Old Guard Were Too Soft
Ares was brought onto the Mighty Avengers during the Initiative era following Marvel’s Civil War. He had already encountered Thor a few times before this point, and the two had fought. Ares disliked Thor and felt him too soft on the villains of the world.
Ares stayed on the Avengers when Norman Osborn took, and he partook in the Siege of Asgard. To Ares’ credit, the devastation of Asgard broke through his exterior, and he turned on Osborn. He paid for it with his life when the Sentry ripped Ares in two. However, Ares has returned since then, as a god doesn’t stay down for long.
7 The Sentry Probably Doesn’t Appreciate Thor Vaporizing Him
During the Siege of Asgard, the Sentry lost control over his Void persona and began wreaking havoc across the city. Thor finally put an end to this by vaporizing Sentry and the Void.
Doctor Strange resurrected the Sentry since then, and the Sentry did have another encounter with a Mjolnir-less Thor and the Avengers. The Sentry wasn’t interested in vengeance at the time, so he only did enough to beat back the Avengers and leave Earth. However, one could likely guess that he still holds a grudge against Thor for killing him.
6 The Punisher Thinks Most Of The Avengers Are Out Of Touch Egotists
The Punisher has never been a big supporter of the conventional superhero set in the Marvel Universe. He holds respect for Captain America, but the remainder of the Avengers are too out-of-touch and weak on crime.
In the aftermath of War of the Realms, the Punisher took it upon himself to cleanse the remaining Trolls, Jotuns, Dark Elves, and other monsters that remained on Earth before hunting down the war criminals across the Ten Realms. Thor urged the Punisher to let him and the Asgardians handle it, but Frank ignored him and even stole one of Thor’s flying goats for transport.
5 Namor The Sub-Mariner Views All Other Kingdoms As Potential Threats
Namor and Thor have come to blows several times, and, in fairness, Namor doesn’t get along with most superheroes. He has a grudging respect for Hulk, Doctor Strange, Silver Surfer, Invisible Woman, Captain America, and the other Invaders, but he only sees the rest of the superhero community as potential enemies.
Thor must be chief among these for Namor, as Thor’s power far outmatches Namor’s own. Furthermore, Thor has gone after the Illuminati in the past, of which Namor was a member, and the strength of an average Asgardian warrior surely outweighs the strength of an Atlantean warrior.
4 Hank Pym Thought Other Avengers Looked Down On Him Even Before Becoming Ultron
Hank Pym, aka Ant-Man, Giant-Man, Goliath, Wasp, and Yellowjacket, has an inferiority complex even greater than the Black Knight’s. While he tried to build friendships with the other Avengers over the years, particularly Iron Man, Hank couldn’t stop thinking of himself as the weak Avenger. Thor’s vast power and strength never helped this.
At various moments in his later years as a hero, Hank Pym let his insecurities get the best of him, and he lashed out at the other Avengers several times. Now that he is fused to Ultron, Hank Pym has fully unleashed his resentment for the other Avengers and has tried to kill them many times.
3 The Squadron Supreme Of America Thought The Avengers Weren’t Patriotic Enough
The new Squadron Supreme of America was always intended to be America’s answer to the Avengers. In their eyes, the Avengers are too loyal to the rest of the world and not loyal enough to America.
Thor is seen as an extreme threat by the Squadron, as he is among the most powerful of the Avengers’ ranks. Furthermore, he is an alien and a foreigner, and the Squadron has no love for anything of the sort.
2 The Red Hulk Doesn’t Trust Gods Or Aliens
The Red Hulk is another detractor of the Avengers, but he also has a deep respect for Captain America. General Thunderbolt Ross saw the world of superheroes as a potential threat to America, but he hated no one more than the Hulk–which is what led to Ross becoming the Red Hulk.
Despite that, the Red Hulk has tussled with the God of Thunder a few times. The first time, Red Hulk punched Thor to the moon and began using Mjolnir against Thor thanks to the lighter gravity (in a moment now hotly-debated by comics fans). Red Hulk took a malicious glee in this, but Thor got his payback later when Steve Rogers put Ross on a leash and forced him to work with Thor.
1 The Immortal Hulk Is No Fan Of The God Of Thunder These Days
Hulk and Thor have always had a strange relationship. They seem to have a grudging respect for one another as two of the most powerful heroes in existence. However, they’ve just as often come to blows in violent showdowns that have shaken the very Earth.
These days, none of the Avengers trust the Immortal Hulk–least of all Thor. In a recent issue of Immortal Hulk by Al Ewing and Joe Bennett, Thor and the Hulk had another battle in which the Hulk took great pleasure in smacking around Thor.
