The Bowery King will return in John Wick 4.
Emmy-winning actor Laurence Fishburne confirmed that his character, The Bowery King, is not yet done with John Wick and all the trouble that he brings, during an interview with Collider. “I should be going to Berlin within another couple of months or so,” he stated, confirming that he’ll be on set soon to film the hit action franchise’s fourth installment.
Fishburne also hinted at what the upcoming Keanu Reeves-led film will be about, in part, stating, “I read the script. It’s really, really cool. As much as it’s the same world as the other three films, it’s just deeper. It’s much deeper in terms of the code of the assassin and the relationship that he has with one character in particular… is really the heart and soul of it.”
However, Fishburne couldn’t confirm which relationship is the heart of the upcoming action film. The Bowery King and John Wick have a rather complicated past. In John Wick: Chapter 2, John asks The Bowery King’s Soup Kitchen for assistance while fleeing assassins who are trying to kill him for a $7 million bounty. Amused at how someone who once attacked him needs his help, he gives John one gun with seven rounds to defend himself. However, this assistance will later put The Bowery King under the vengeful thumb of The High Table.
In John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum, Winston announces that John is excommunicated from the Continental and all its social networks. The High Table then falsely accuses The Bowery King of assisting John. Despite his insistence that the handgun was given before Winston’s announcement, The High Table slays almost all of The Bowery King’s men. Although The Bowery King feigns loyalty to The Adjudicator, he later approaches John Wick, asking him to join him in waging a war against The High Table. John Wick: Chapter 2 was the first film that Fishburne and Reeves co-starred in since The Matrix trilogy.
Franchise director Chad Stahelski will return to helm John Wick 4, with a script co-written by Chapter 3 — Parabellum‘s Shay Hatten and Michael Finch (Predators). In June, it was confirmed that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Ip Man‘s Donnie Yen is costarring as one of John Wick’s friends, with Japanese-British pop superstar Rina Sawayama and Shamier Anderson (Stowaway) playing as-yet-undisclosed roles.
Directed by Chad Stahelski, John Wick: Chapter 4 stars Keanu Reeves, Shamier Anderson, Rina Sawayama, Donnie Yen and Laurence Fishburne. The film arrives in theaters May 27, 2022.
