Smash Bros: Waluigi, Monster Hunter Should Be Ultimate’s FInal DLC

The final DLC offerings for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate have been the source of tons of speculation, in part due to the crazy characters that have already been announced. Fan-favorites like Banjo & Kazooie, Sephiroth and Steve have already set people’s expectations high, so many have high hopes for the last two slots of Fighting Pass 2. With E3 2021 right around the corner, rumors have certainly kicked up regarding what characters could potentially be added to Smash Ultimate.

Any rumor or leak regarding Smash Ultimate DLC shouldn’t be taken too seriously, especially since they mostly end up being false. Unlike last year’s Game Awards, there are far fewer potential leaks leading up to E3. That doesn’t mean the rumor mill has been completely dry, as three big names have been circulating in response to recent data mining, leaks and speculation that have been circulating the internet.

A Monster Hunter Representative

How to play Monster Hunter in Dungeons and Dragons

Monster Hunter already has a bit of representation in Smash Ultimate as Rathalos is featured as both a boss and an assist trophy. However, a leaker suggested that Nintendo is supposedly planning a Smash Ultimate concert that would feature music from every franchise in the game. The leaker posted what they say is the list of songs to be played at this concert, including a song from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 that was added alongside Pyra/Mythra.

While this leak has seen a fair amount of debunking already, it should be worth mentioning that Pyra/Mythra had not yet been officially revealed when the leak was posted. One of the last two songs listed in the concert leak was “Proof of a Hero” from the Monster Hunter series, seemingly suggesting that either a Hunter from Monster Hunter or one of the game’s many monsters could be added.  Of course, it should also be noted that an arrangement of “Proof of a Hero” from Monster Hunter Generations is already in the game.

A Legend of Zelda Representative

This rumor has a couple of key pieces of evidence supporting it. The first is that The Legend of Zelda series is turning 35 this year, an event that Nintendo has been fairly low-key about compared to other recent anniversaries. The second is a rumor that Nintendo’s E3 presentation will heavily focus on Zelda and even be themed around the franchise. This rumor has a bit more weight since multiple prominent sources within the games industry have supported it.

If Nintendo’s E3 presentation is going to be Zelda-focused, then it makes sense that at least one of the last two Fighter Pass 2 characters for Smash would be another Legend of Zelda representative. The only question left on fans’ minds is who said character could be. Given the surprise success of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, one of the champions from that game could join the fight. Both Impa and Midna are popular fan-picks from elsewhere in the franchise as well.

Waluigi

Surprisingly, Waluigi is the only definitive character that’s been mentioned in the rumor circles as of recent. Smash fans have wanted Waluigi in Smash Ultimate since before the game’s release, and Nintendo may finally be recognizing just how popular Luigi’s purple doppelganger is. Waluigi has been prominently featured in the advertising for Mario Golf: Super Rush and even popped up in an official Nintendo video showing off new Nintendo Switch Lite colors.

There is a small bit of information gathered by eagle-eyed fans that could be pointing towards Waluigi not only coming to Smash Ultimate but also being a surprise third DLC character. In short, DLC characters are all assigned special URL codes that follow a distinct pattern on Smash Ultimate‘s website. If the same pattern from Fighter Pass 1 is being followed, then there are actually three more empty URLs rather than two, which may imply Waluigi being added as a bonus in response to the outcry of support from Waluigi fans.
