Wonder Woman Finds One of the DCEU’s Last Safe Havens in RUINS

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Wonder Woman #773, by Michael W. Conrad, Becky Cloonan, Travis Moore, Tamra Bonvillain and Pat Brosseau, on sale now.

Wonder Woman has been on an odyssey through the reborn DC Multiverse as of late, with no discernible way to return home to the friendly, familiar faces she knew back on her own Earth at the start of the Infinite Frontier era. Trapped in the ethereal Norse realm of Valhalla with the Scandinavian pantheon of deities and demigods, Diana Prince has frantically searched for a way to escape back to the main DC Universe. And finally making her egress from Valhalla and back in her fantasy homeland among the Greco-Roman pantheon, Wonder Woman is shocked to find that her old stomping grounds have been completely torn asunder, reduced to a pile of smoldering rubble, with known of her gods or sisters visibly present.

Themyscira Destroyed

Themyscira and Mount Olympus have had an especially tumultuous turn of events recently, enduring a string of jubilant triumphs and fiery defeats. The Amazons appeared to be stronger than ever, finally setting aside their differences with the splinter faction the Bana-Mighdall and rallying under a single banner on Paradise Island. This renewed alliance came with the shocking discovery that a third faction of Amazons had existed and operated in secret for centuries, based out of the Brazilian rainforests. Before the Amazons could reach out to their South American sisters properly, the fires of Dark Nights: Death Metal were ignited as the dark god Perpetua and her armies from the Dark Multiverse rose and set their sights on the main DCU at the start of their rampage.

As the heroes of the DCU fell to Perpetua and her amassed forces helmed by the Batman Who Laughs, Themyscira became the site for the universe’s desperate last stand, with Wonder Woman herself at the head of the valiant defense. While Wonder Woman and the heroes fought bravely, the Batman Who Laughs and his Dark Knights would emerge victorious, with Themyscira transformed into a forge and prison for those that opposed Perpetua. Wonder Woman herself was relegated to run the converted ruins of her old home before Perpetua and the Batman Who Laughs were eventually overthrown and the multiverse was triumphantly restored directly by Diana’s actions.

At the start of the Infinite Frontier era, Themyscira similarly appeared to be restored from the horrors it was subjected to during Death Metal. With Diana remaining missing as she arrived on Valhalla, her mother Queen Hippolyta claimed the mantle of Wonder Woman in the interim, joining the latest incarnation of the Justice League in her daughter’s absence. And as the new Wonder Girl Yara Flor has surfaced and begun to learn about her Amazon destiny, the Amazons on Themyscira appear to be flourishing back on their island home as the Ancient Greek gods begin to reassert their presence in the DCU.

It is unclear what exactly has befallen Olympus and what has become of the resident gods and those that worship them but Wonder Woman has leapt from the frying pan to land directly in the fire. Diana very nearly lost herself defending the Norse pantheon and the realm of Valhalla from a magical curse and it appears that the Greco-Roman pantheon is faring even worse than their Northern European counterparts. Diana may have finally made it home after enduring the never-ending battle besieging Valhalla but, on the outside, Wonder Woman’s fight has just gotten a hell of a lot more personal.
