Arc System Works has released a new story trailer to celebrate the launch of its latest fighting game, Guilty Gear Strive.
While the series is best known for its highly technical mechanics and flashy, cel-shaded visuals, the new trailer released by series developer Arc System Works instead focuses on Guilty Gear Strive‘s surprisingly dense narrative. The story once again focuses on series protagonist Sol Badguy as he fights his way through the machinations of “That Man,” the mysterious creator of the series’ titular monsters, the Gears. Sol must also deal with the mysterious and foul-mouthed time traveler I-No, as well as the new villain introduced in this trailer, the bizarrely named Happy Chaos.
Guilty Gear Strive is the seventh mainline entry in the Guilty Gear franchise, which originally debuted on the original Playstation in 1998. Guilty Gear was created by Daisuke Ishiwatari, who, in addition to serving as the director and lead designer on all of the games in the main series, has also composed many of the heavy-metal songs featured in the games’ soundtracks. The series is the flagship franchise of Arc System Works, which is also known for creating the fighting games Dragon Ball FigherZ and BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger. Previous entries in the series were famous for their intricate gameplay systems and high-speed combat, but Strive was designed with the goal of creating a more deliberately paced, accessible fighting game that would not be as intimidating to new players.
Guilty Gear Strive is developed and published by Arc System Works and is available for PC, Playstation 4 and Playstation 5. An arcade release by Sega is planned but does not currently have a release date.
