Netflix premiered the full-length trailer for its Fear Street adaptation, a trilogy of movies based on the best-selling horror novels by R.L. Stine.
The trailer opens with someone speaking in voiceover, claiming “There was a time when things were good in Shadyside. But now, that’s all gone.” It goes on to follow a small group of teenagers living in 1994 as they uncover the terrifying history behind their hometown of Shadyside, Ohio, including a gruesome set of murders that took place at a summer camp in 1978. Eventually, they realize it all goes back to an ancient witch who, upon being wrongly persecuted by the town’s people in 1666, sought revenge by placing a curse on Shadyside and all who live there.
In addition to teasing the trilogy’s bloody violence and plot, the Fear Street trailer spotlights cast members like Stranger Things actor Sadie Sink. Community veteran Gillian Jacobs also costars here as, seemingly, the only survivor of the 1978 Sunnyside massacre and possibly the key to stopping the town’ supernatural murders from happening for good.
Unlike his mostly kid-friendly Goosebumps books, Stine’s Fear Street novels are targeted at teenagers and young adults, with a focus on murder mysteries that sometimes, but not always, feature supernatural elements. The Fear Street movie trilogy is similarly geared towards older viewers, as evidenced by the trailer’s creepy tone and hints at mature content, like characters dropping f-bombs. This may have also been a factor in The Walt Disney Company’s decision to sell the films to Netflix in Aug. 2020, having inherited them from Chernin Entertainment after purchasing Fox’s movie and TV assets in 2019.
The official synopsis for Netflix’s Fear Street trilogy reads,
In 1994, a group of teenagers discovers that the terrifying events that have haunted their town for generations may all be connected — and that they may be the next targets. Based on R.L. Stine’s best selling horror series, the trilogy follows the nightmare through Shadyside’s sinister history.
Directed and co-written by Leigh Janiak, the Fear Street trilogy stars Sadie Sink, Kiana Madeira, Olivia Welch, Benjamin Flores Jr., Darrell Britt-Gibson, Ashley Zuckerman, Fred Hechinger, Julia Rehwald, Jeremy Ford and Gillian Jacobs. Part One: 1994 begins streaming July 2, followed by Part Two: 1978 on July 9 and Part Three: 1666 on July 16.
