Attack On Titan: 10 Things That Make No Sense About Floch | CBR

Since his introduction in the third season of the Attack on Titan anime, Floch has drawn the eyes of viewers with his disrespectful and inconsistent behavior. Much like Eren, Floch has a tendency to run his mouth a bit too much before switching sides and letting his actions betray his words.

Floch has contradicted himself so many times that fans have come to use him as the prime example as to why the Yeagerist’s cause is a corrupt one. Eren Yeager’s actions carry weight because his motivation makes sense, but what about Floch?

10 Floch Joined The Survey Corps Despite Understanding The Risks

Anime Attack On Titan Floch Dinner Interruption

Floch is able to quickly explain away his decision to join the scouts by bringing up the extra propaganda surrounding the survey corps plan to take back Shiganshina District and reseal Wall Maria. The way he explains it makes it appear as if Floch is aware of the power of propaganda, yet he still puts his life on the line for the sake of what many believed to be a suicide mission.

The fact that he is willing to put his life on the line for something as epic as the Rumbling makes good sense, but attempting a suicide mission just doesn’t make sense for an ego as large as Floch’s.

9 Floch Follows Erwin Into A Field Of Death

The only consistent thing about Floch is his ability to hide his own self-interest behind his feigned allegiances. These feigned allegiances are so powerful that they even convince Floch that he is not motivated by self-interest despite the fact that he almost always puts his own life before the lives of those around him.

The fact that Floch convinced himself to follow Erwin to their deaths makes no sense. Of course, it can be reasoned that Floch believes that his ego will be satiated if his life is spent on a worthy cause. If this were the case though, the moment Floch finds out that the Beast Titan survived their charge, he should have dropped Erwin’s name in the mud.

8 He Survived The Beast Titan’s Assault

There is absolutely no way Floch should have survived the kamikaze run at the Beast Titan during the Return to Shiganshina arc. The scatter shot that the Beast Titan was throwing was wide enough and dense enough that no one could have escaped it.

Even if Floch had been missed by the rocks flying through the air at breakneck speeds, the horse running at 70kmph beneath him would have sent him flying through the air the moment it took the blow from Zeke’s throw.  The injuries he sustained after flying off of his horse should have been enough to cripple him beyond recovery.

7 Somehow Floch Managed To Carry Erwin’s Body Into Shiganshina

After surviving the assault on the Beast Titan and avoiding injury, Floch manages to find his way into Shiganshina District with Commander Erwin slung over his shoulder. Even ignoring the fact that Floch should at least be somewhat bruised and injured after falling off of his horse just minutes earlier, it makes no sense that he was able to carry Erwin this far in such a short amount of time.

It is especially hard to believe when fans consider the fact that both gates into Shiganshina were blocked off by Eren’s Titan Hardening ability.

6 He Disrespects Levi’s Decision To Save Armin

Floch does have a reasonable point to make about Eren and Mikasa letting their emotions play a part in their decision to save Armin over Erwin, but he is way out of line accusing Levi of doing the same thing. Not only is Levi Floch’s superior, he is a well-respected and elite member of the scouts who is fully capable of making difficult decisions without his emotions getting in the way.

Furthermore, Floch fails to understand that it was Erwin who trusted Levi with the Titan serum, which means whatever decision Levi makes is ostensibly backed by Erwin.

5 Floch Uses Erwin’s Memorial To Lecture Eren, Armin, & Mikasa

Floch’s disapproval of Levi’s decision to save Armin is warranted considering the way Erwin was able to benefit the people of Paradis during his service. Still, there is a time and a place to voice dissent and the fact that Floch chose Erwin’s memorial to voice his opinion is unbecoming.

After all his talk about respecting Erwin, he fails to make it through the memorial without putting himself up on a pulpit and preaching at Eren, Mikasa, and anyone else who will listen.

4 His Iconic “Shush” Contradicts His Outspoken Personality

Floch Foster Smiling

The shot of Floch shushing Hange has become an iconic image for the Yeagerist. Still, Floch shushing anyone is a bit too ironic for any dedicated Attack on Titan fan to take seriously.

It is unkown if Floch understands this irony, but it raises too many questions about Floch’s reliability as a Yeagerist for fans to overlook. How could the same man that decided to lecture Eren at Erwin’s memorial be capable of keeping the secret plot of the Yeagerists behind sealed lips. It makes no sense for Floch to be capable of keeping the secret about the wine for so long, even if he is thoroughly devoted to Eren.

3 He Sides With Eren After Accusing Him Of Being Too Emotional

Anime Attack On Titan Floch Holds Back Eren

When Eren and Floch first meet, they are on opposing sides, but the final arc of Attack on Titan sets them up as comrades willing to risk their lives for the other. It makes no sense for Eren to trust Floch after the events that followed the return to Shiganshina, but it makes even less sense for Floch to lay down his life for Eren after calling him emotionally incapable of making the right decision. Though, perhaps Eren’s newfound stoicism has something to do with Floch’s inconsistent behavior.

2 He Changed From Coward To Kamikaze

The majority of screen time that Floch gets during the Return to Shiganshina arc presents the young man as a coward. Every time Erwin shouts a command he responds with the sort of hesitation you would expect from a deserter.

Still, when Erwin gives his final command to run at the Beast Titan in an attempt to distract him from Levi’s assault, Floch joins in as if desertion weren’t an option. While this sacrifice is something fans can respect, it is inconsistent with the character that fans have been used to.

1 He Sides With Zeke Yeager After The Beast Titan Killed His Idol

Choosing to side with Eren Yeager is one thing, but the fact that Floch continues to follow Eren even after finding out that he is in cahoots with the Beast Titan is another. If anything were to proove Floch’s disloyalty, it would be this.

After risking his life to defeat the Beast Titan and risking his own reputation for the sake of Erwin Smith, Floch joins Erwin’s murderer without expressing an ounce of regret.
