The question of whether or not Thor could ever truly defeat the Hulk has echoed around the Marvel Universe for years. It even trickled over into the movies where the two heroes scrapped in Avengers and Thor: Ragnarok. However, Immortal Hulk #47 adds a new wrinkle to this rivalry as the Hulk almost kills Marvel’s strongest god with a scary show of his healing factor’s power.

This takes place in Manhattan where Thor, Captain America, Iron Man and the rest of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes touch down to restrain the Jade Giant. However, they don’t know after he returned from the dead and decimated the U-Foes, this version of the Green Goliath is among the toughest they’ve ever faced.

Piloted by the wily Joe Fixit, this particular Hulk is also a mix of many Hulk personas, and he’s unpredictable and only getting stronger as the fight goes on. AsHulk’s rage seemingly infects the others, a massive brawl ensues. The Avengers want a bit of revenge as well, as they just can’t seem to put him down for good. This all adds up to a chance for Hulk to flex his new muscles.

When Thor taunts the Hulk, the new Hulk decides to shut him up by splitting his arm over Thor’s face. It then heals again and basically keeps the Odinson embedded in Hulk’s arm, suffocating the Thunder God in the Hulk’s regrowing muscles.

Hulk Thor Arm

It’s a straight-up horror scene that turns the Hulk’s appendage into something as constricting as a face-hugger from Alien, stifling the god and effectively blinding him.  Thor’s oxygen starts running low too, so Hulk’s salivating this moment, suffocating him while punching the others as Captain America begs for mercy.

With this attack, Hulk uses his healing factor as a deadly weapon, something he did earlier in this book by warping his body to assimilate enemies and murder them. Thankfully, Black Panther is there to cut the arm off after he realized what Hulk was doing in the most sadistic manner to his Avengers teammate.

Had he not done this, the Hulk may have very well killed Thor, but the Asgardian can count his lucky stars his teammate saved him. While the Hulk and his allies are getting ready to take on the Leader and the One-Below-All, moments like this serve as a reminder of the monster lying beneath the heroic surface of the Hulk.
