Debuting in 1977, Jessica Drew was the first of Marvel’s heroes to use the name Spider-Woman. Though her origins have been changed and rewritten since her first appearance, some details about her story have remained the same: her superpowers being a byproduct of her scientist parents’ experiments, her own brand of spider-powers (including a mind-control pheromone) and her connection to the terrorist organization HYDRA. Since her debut, Spider-Woman has been a member of the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as a steadfast ally to Marvel’s other spider-heroes.
Into the Spider-Verse was first released on Dec. 14, 2018. The film was met with widespread acclaim, with critics and fans praising its character-driven story, sense of humor and groundbreaking animation. Spider-Verse would go on to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. A sequel was announced in November 2019, and production began in June 2020.
Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 arrives in theaters Oct. 7, 2022.
