One of Billy Batson’s most infamous aliases lives on, in the form of an upcoming Shazam! original graphic novel for young readers.
Shazam! Thundercrack will be released next year as part of DC’s Books for Young Readers line, according to a Wednesday DC press release. “From acclaimed writer and illustrator Yehudi Mercado, this original story is set within the Shazam! movie timeline, featuring Billy Batson as the newest player on the Fawcett Tigers’ football team,” the release states.
The OGN will take place after the events of 2019’s Shazam! movie starring Zachary Levi and Asher Angel. In the film, “Thundercrack” was one of the more amusing, and temporary, monikers given to the titular superhero, which also included other aliases such as Red Cyclone and Captain Sparklefingers. How or whether Mercado’s Shazam! Thundercrack will impact the movie’s upcoming sequel, reportedly titled Shazam! Fury of the Gods, is unknown.

“Billy Batson has never been a team player and becoming the superhero Shazam didn’t seem to change that much, but his new strength and stamina will make football a breeze,” the release further states. “After skipping school one too many times, Billy is offered a choice: football or detention.”
“Between football practice and superhero training, Billy’s muscles are getting bigger, but so is his ego.”
Shazam! Thundercrack will be Mercado’s DC debut. The writer/artist has served as one of Disney Interactive’s art directors, contributing to the Guardians of the Galaxy mobile videogame, according to the release. Among his OGNs are Chunky from HarperCollins Publishers and Epic’s Cat Ninja, which he illustrated.
Shazam! Thundercrack is scheduled for release both digitally and in stores June 7, 2022.
