Black Adam Producer Talks Dwayne Johnson’s Long-Term DC Role

Black Adam producer Dany Garcia shed light on how long Dwayne Johnson plans on committing to the role of the film’s titular character in future DC projects.

According to Variety, Garcia refused to put down a specific number on how many Black Adam movies fans can expect but did note: “We want to do many. We’re excited about our long-term relationship with DC on this property.”

The concept of Johnson portraying this DC Comics character dates back to 2007, though Johnson officially confirmed that he would be portraying Black Adam in the DC Extended Universe in September 2014. A first look at Black Adam, along with concept art, was unveiled at DC FanDome in 2020, with Johnson himself speaking on the titular character.

Producer Hiram Garcia has also spoken on the future of Black Adam in the DCEU, saying that there are “very big ambitions” for the character. “How they’re going to connect with other characters is still all being laid out, but I think fans are going to be happy, ultimately, with the way we end up guiding it,” he said.

The solo Black Adam movie began principal photography in April 2021 and Johnson has ensured that fans are kept up to date on the production through various teases on his social media. For example, Johnson recently posted a shadowy first glimpse at Black Adam on Instagram. “If you know the comic book mythology, then you know where his pain comes from,” Johnson said in the caption. “His rage. His wife and children killed. His people brutally enslaved. He is not a superhero, but rather a champion. Champion of the poor and beaten down. Champion of the people. And he is the most unstoppable force in the DC UNIVERSE.”

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Black Adam stars Dwayne Johnson, Noah Centineo, Aldis Hodge, Quintessa Swindell, Pierce Brosnan, Marwan Kenzari, Sarah Shahi, James Cusati-Moyer and Bodhi Sabongui. The film arrives in theaters July 29, 2022.
