How The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers Sets Up Season 2 | CBR

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers Season 1, Episode 10, “State of Play,” now streaming on Disney+.

The Season 1 finale of The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers wraps up the first season of the Don’t Bothers hockey team in a satisfying way, but it also sets up possibilities for a second season to take off.

Though most of the storylines ran their course, there were still a few left unanswered with plenty of room to explore in the next season should the series be renewed.

A New Era for the Mighty Ducks

The most obvious storyline that will be explored in Season 2 is the fact that the Don’t Bothers have reclaimed the Mighty Ducks name in the spirit of teamwork and inclusivity. The finale saw the Don’t Bothers play against the Mighty Ducks with the winner claiming the name for their organization. Next season, the former Mighty Ducks and Coach T will have to go under a different name. The new and improved Mighty Ducks, however, went back to the yellow and green color scheme of the original film’s jersey design, neatly connecting to the Don’t Bothers uniforms. It also helps to differentiate them from Coach T’s toxic franchise they won the name from.

The new Mighty Ducks will have to work hard to forge their new legacy, and now that they’ve proven themselves as winners, they will likely be tested just as Alex was tested when she got a taste of excellence. The new Mighty Ducks need to make sure they maintain the community they have built in their inaugural season. With their new name, they’ll likely attract new players who will also help to define the new era.

Adventures in Young Love

The romantic relationship between Sofi and Evan is still in its very early stages. In Episode 9, “Head Games,” the two finally admitted they liked each other as more than friends and teammates, and in the finale they had their first kiss. Season 2 could explore this relationship and how it impacts them as players and teammates, as well as how it affects the rest of their team.

Nick is also in a new relationship with podcaster Mary Joe. Perhaps the next season will increase the number of subplots that explore young love and bring other members of the team into these kinds of stories. The original film trilogy featured the blooming, ongoing romance between Connie Moreau and Guy Germaine, so it is a theme of the franchise.

Alex and Bombay’s Relationship

Alex Marrow and Coach Gordon Bombay have had chemistry from the very beginning of the season — even before they bonded, when Bombay was still hiding himself from the world and Alex was unsure of her role in the world of hockey. There have been moments all season where it seemed like maybe they would take their relationship to the next level, but it didn’t happen in Season 1.

It seems likely that in Season 2 the relationship, romantic or otherwise, will continue to develop between Alex and Bombay. Bombay has finally reacquainted himself with his love of hockey, and Alex is thinking about returning to law school — a world Bombay previously inhabited. Their individual growth over the course of the season is connected to each other as they have helped to make each other better versions of themselves. It would make sense to continue this in the next season, especially since Bombay has had romantic relationships in the first two films of the original franchise.

The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers stars Lauren Graham, Emilio Estevez, Brady Noon, Maxwell Simkins, Swayam Bhatia, Luke Islam, Kiefer O’Reilly, Taegen Burns, Bella Higginbotham, and DJ Watts.
