Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball was a breakout success for the creator during its debut in the 1980s, but it’s somehow become even more popular over time and is regarded as a beloved anime franchise. Part of what makes Dragon Ball so enjoyable is that it tells a story that continues to evolve and push its characters and series to new places.
Dragon Ball’s scope has broadened to the point that trips to foreign planets are par for the course and the series is full of extraterrestrial species who make humans look boring in comparison. Dragon Ball frequently features Earth under attack, but there are a number of planets in the series that are subject to even more volatile conditions and persistent bad luck.
10 Arlia Is A Harsh Terrain With A Temperamental People
Arlia doesn’t serve a major purpose in Dragon Ball Z and it’s actually an effective filler addition that showcases Vegeta and Nappa’s raw strength and brutal natures before they arrive on Earth. Arlia is a despondent planet with an insectoid race that’s ruled by King Moal. The Arlians are tough individuals to begin with, but Vegeta and Nappa decimate their planet and leave the volatile environment in even worse shape. Arlia appears to have oppressive customs and it’s unlikely that the species had a mission of peace in the works. Vegeta and Nappa make sure that Arlia remains beyond repair.
9 Garlic Jr.’s Makyo Star Is A Power Source For Evil
Dragon Ball incorporates numerous demonic destinations, some of which are their own planets. The Makyo Star is the home planet of Garlic Jr. and his people. The grim place is also known as the Planet of Evil Demons and it functions as a power source for Garlic Jr. and the Makyan people. If A Makyan is close enough to the planet, then they’ll receive a major boost in strength that comes directly from the Makyo Star. This basically makes the planet a giant weapon and anyone who lives there will get sapped of their strength.
8 Polaris’ Subzero Temperatures Make It Incredibly Inhospitable
Dragon Ball GT still receives a lot of criticism from the Dragon Ball community, but one of the series’ better decisions is to take on a galactic scope that scatters the Black Star Dragon Balls to disparate planets. Goku, Pan, and Trunks need to retrieve these Dragon Balls within a year, and one Black Star Dragon Ball ends up on Planet Polaris.
The biggest obstacle on Polaris is that it’s an ice planet and the low temperature makes it highly unpleasant for human life. Dragon Ball GT features more dangerous planets, but the terrain on Polaris is intense.
7 Pui Pui’s Homeworld, Zoon, Is A Monster Haven
Dragon Ball Z’s final major arc makes Buu and his various forms the major threats, but before the evil entity’s awakening, there are steady obstacles that come from Babidi’s trusted lackeys. Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan face off against a group of Majin warriors as they make their way through Babidi’s spaceship. The simulation on the ship recreates the terrain of these villain’s home planets. Pui Pui comes from Zoon, an aggressive world with gravity that’s ten times that of Earth. None of these conditions are ideal, especially knowing that a whole race of more Pui Pui are also waiting on Zoon.
6 Luud Is A Brainwashed Planet That Worships A False Idol
One popular planet that Goku and company need to visit in Dragon Ball GT is Luud, a planet that ostensibly exists to be a monument to the machine mutant, Luud. The planet is filled with members of a devoted cult that worships Luud and sacrifices any dissenters. The machine planet M-2 also bears a connection to Planet Luud and they’re both areas that either force submission or punish any original thought. Luud has gorgeous architecture and a forgiving environment, but it’s the population and customs that are the problem.
5 Yakon’s Dark Star Is Literally A World Of Darkness
Yakon is another one of Babidi’s minions that the heroes need to face before Buu and he marks Goku’s Super Saiyan 2 transformation, which overloads Yakon with energy. Yakon is an alien that absorbs power and light, which connects to his desolate homeworld, Dark Star.
Dark Star is a Riddick-esque environment with no light and a home for more of these terrifying aliens. Yakon is comfortable on Dark Star, but it’d drive any human mad. It’d be interesting to see how Dark Star would handle a Saiyan invasion, but it’s likely for the best that it’s not revisited.
4 Shamo Faces The Wrath Of Broly & Is Left In Shambles
The Dragon Ball Z movies that focus on Broly do an effective job at illustrating his destructive nature with a number of innocent planets that get caught in the crossfire of Broly and his father, Paragus. The Saiyan duo enslaves the Shamo population and make their lives miserable. Planet Shamo is a neighboring body to New Vegeta, which Broly and Paragus also plan to manipulate. It seems like Planet Shamo was peaceful and minded their own business, but they become a casualty to these Saiyan’s hubris and their planet is left in ruins.
3 Planet Cretaceous Is Overrun With Dinosaurs & Unsafe For Humans
Part of the fun in Dragon Ball is that the version of Earth that it presents is full of unique details, like anthropomorphic animals and the existence of dinosaurs. Dragon Ball GT introduces plenty of planets that have obvious gimmicks that are meant to act as obstacles for Goku and friends while they collect the Black Star Dragon Balls. Planet Cretaceous looks peaceful enough, but it’s overrun with dinosaurs, which is just a problem that’s waiting to happen. Beerus also mentions Planet Gaspa, a dragon-filled planet, that’s likely equally volatile.
2 Dabura’s Demon Realm Is The Ultimate Destination For Evil
Dragon Ball Z’s Buu Saga covers so much territory that a number of villains quickly get swept under the rug as the series pivots to a new evil. Dabura is the King of Demons and someone who seems like a significant threat. Dabura comes from Demon Realm, an evil world that’s actually a planet that’s devoted to these malevolent monsters where they can reign supreme. A vacation in Demon Realm is likely not that different from being sent to hell, and it’s not a pleasant place that’s causally visited.
1 Fu’s Prison Planet Is Designed To Be The Ultimate Punishment
Super Dragon Ball Heroes is a promotional anime series that basically throws every version of every Dragon Ball character together into chaotic multiversal madness. One of the major arcs of this series details Fu’s construction of a Prison Planet, a debilitating world that’s made up of a cluster of other planets. Fu’s aim is for this destination to be the ultimate punishment that can hold any individual. Not only does the Prison Planet co-opt other planets, but it leaves them in an even more dangerous state.
