The Don’t Bothers head to the state championships in The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers Season 1, Episode 9, “Head Games,” but along the way young love blossoms.

There are three key romances present in the episode: Maya and a boy named Zander she meets at the hotel, podcast co-hosts Mary Joe and Nick, and teammates Evan and Sofi.

Maya and Zander Ruin Girls Weekend

On the team bus, Maya proposes a girls weekend for her, Sofi and Lauren to all hang out together. She even encourages Sofi to blow off Evan in favor of hanging out with just the girls. However, her commitment to the plan crumbles the moment she meets a cute boy named Zander at the hotel where the team is staying for the tournament. She immediately bails on the girls to pursue this new relationship.

Later at the dance, she and Zander argue about music and she complains about relationship woes to Lauren who advises her that she doesn’t need Zander anyway. Zander returns with a stuffy and wins Maya back. They aren’t meant to be, however, as the following morning Maya declares that she and Zander broke up for good. The short-lived relationship didn’t even survive a single episode.

Nick and Mary Joe Get Entangled Through Confusion

Nick and Mary Joe used to be podcast co-hosts together until Nick joined the Don’t Bothers. Mary Joe continued to podcast the Don’t Bothers season and joins the team as they head to the state championships. She misunderstands Evan asking her for girl advice as an invitation to the dance as his date. Nick then confides in Evan that he’s been harboring a secret crush on her all along and he encourages Evan to be a good date to Mary Joe as Nick prioritizes her happiness over his own.

Later though, Evan explains to Mary Joe that he actually likes Sofi and Mary Joe is fine with that because she secretly likes Nick. Evan then pairs up Nick and Mary Joe, and explains to them that they actually like each other. It works and they end up holding hands at the dance in a much happier exploration in young love than the dramatic story of Maya and Zander.

Evan and Sofi Try to Make Each Other Jealous

Evan and Sofi’s budding feelings for each other have been building all season long. Evan decides now is the time to finally admit his feelings for her while on the team bus headed for the state championships. Bombay had explained to the team that the tournament was holding a dance for all the players. Evan gets support from the boys on his team to help him craft a text message to Sofi to ask her to be his date to the dance.

Sofi is happy to get that text from Evan, but Maya convinces her to stay committed to their planned girls weekend instead, so Sofi sends him a text back that seems to blow him off. Later though, Maya abandons her own plans for a girls weekend, so Lauren encourages Sofi to take the plunge and tell Evan she wants to go to the dance with him. Her plan hits a blocker though when she sees Mary Joe accept what she thinks is Evan’s invitation to the dance and the subsequent hug between the two.

To make Evan jealous and get back at him for going on a date with someone else, Sofi brings Trevor, a Ducks player, as her date to the dance. Evan and Sofi spend most of the evening trying to make each other jealous. Evan eventually tries to talk to Sofi alone and invites her into a photo booth to talk. The booth captures their proceeding fight in photos as Evan says Trevor is only interested in Sofi to steal team secrets for the Ducks.

The next day, Evan apologizes to Sofi for what he said during their fight and admits that he likes her — romantically. She admits that she likes him too as they sit together on the way to their first game of the state championships.

The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers stars Lauren Graham, Emilio Estevez, Brady Noon, Maxwell Simkins, Swayam Bhatia, Luke Islam, Kiefer O’Reilly, Taegen Burns, Bella Higginbotham, and DJ Watts.
