WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Infinite Frontier: Secret Files #3 by Dan Watters, Williamson, Stephen Byrne and Tom Napolitano, now available digitally.
“Infinite Frontier” has seen the return of many faces from comics past. With heroes like Jade and Obsidian, the children of Golden Age Green Lantern Alan Scott, stepping back into the spotlight after a long time away, it makes sense that some of their villains would follow suit. That’s the case in Infinite Frontier: Secret Files #3, which sees the return of an old adversary of Infinity Inc.
After meeting with their father in Infinite Frontier #0, Jade gets an alert from her Starheart, the source of her power. With everything that’s been going on in the DC Universe since she and her brother returned, Jade is unsure about the Starheart. It feels different now, so she is unsure what the alert is even about or why she set it up. She asks her brother to accompany her and use his powers to take them both to the source of the problem so that she can avoid using the Starheart.

When they arrive they save a hiker from falling to his death. The hiker was compelled to do so by a song being sung nearby. When they track it to its source they’re greeted by an old foe — the apocalyptic god known as Chroma.
Chroma first appeared in Infinity Inc. #14 by Roy Thomas, Dann Thomas, Todd McFarlane, Tony DeZuniga, Anthony Tollin and Adrienne Roy. Chroma crashed a concert that Infinity, Inc. was doing security for and started to sing his own song. Although the song was all about an impending apocalypse and the inevitability of death, Chroma gained a large following from it. Nobody could get the song out of their heads, which soon included Infinity, Inc. Only Obsidian was unaffected, putting him in direct conflict with his teammates. They stopped Obsidian before he could land the final blow in his fight against Chroma.
However, Chroma claimed the only reason Obsidian bested them was that their attention during the fight was temporarily focused on something far from our galaxy. If Infinity, Inc. hadn’t stopped Obsidian, Chroma claimed they would have let their body die and their apocalyptic song would never have stopped, leaving humanity doomed. Chroma told Infinity, Inc. that they would leave Earth for a million years and then return with a different song. This is something that Jade immediately reminds them of when they meet again in Infinite Frontier: Secret Files #3. Chroma explains that their return was prompted by the rebirth of the universe from Dark Nights: Death Metal. They tell Jade and Obsidian that they want to hear how everything dies in this new richer universe, as it is different from when they first fought and therefore has an entirely new death too.
As Chroma reveals that they wish to sing the world into oblivion, Obsidian envelops the three of them in the Shadowlands, a place of infinite darkness that he is connected to and draws his powers from. Noting that Chroma wanted something new to sing of, Obsidian asks Chroma if they would want to sing about the Shadowlands. Of course, Chroma would love to sing about it, placing this song over the one he planned to sing that would cause Earth to end.
Obsidian asks Chroma how long it will take them to finish their new song. Not sure how to measure the song’s length in Earth hours, they give an estimate of somewhere between twenty minutes and fifteen million years.
As the siblings leave the Shadowlands, Jade is concerned that the song might last for only twenty minutes, leading Chroma to return and immediately cause the apocalypse they envisioned. Obsidian tells her that if Chroma really wanted to destroy Earth, they probably will. Until then, they just have to enjoy the time they have and enjoy the music. Jade can hear Chroma’s song from one of the deepest corners of the Shadowlands, no longer a threat but simply a beautiful song.
