The Titans of the Attack On Titan universe are forces of nature with their tremendously high physical strength, stature, and ability to regenerate endlessly. Until recently, they were powerful enough to dominate the entire world, especially when under the directive of Ymir Fritz.
In spite of this, many characters who became Titans did so against their will. Considering the drawbacks of turning into one (whether reverting into a mindless pure Titan or drastically shortening one’s lifespan as a Titan shifter), it’s understandable why they resisted their transformation as assiduously as they did.
10 Varis Was Transformed Into A Titan By Imbibing Zeke’s Spinal Fluid
Varis was a member of the Scouts who accompanied Levi to watch Zeke Yeager as the military discussed what to do with him. He (and everyone except Ackerman himself) lacked the foresight not to drink on the job and subsequently imbibed the Beast Titan’s spinal fluid.
As a result, Varis was turned into a pure Titan and used as a weapon against the captain when the time came for Zeke to make his daring escape. Levi was forced to cut him down before pursuing the villain responsible for his transformation.
9 Connie’s Mom Was Transformed Alongside The Other Denizens of Ragako
Connie’s mom was transformed alongside the other members of Ragako village into pure Titans. Since her legs were too weak to carry the rest of her body, she remained paralyzed at the place of her transformation.
Springer was haunted by how his mother’s body was twisted and almost fed Falco to her so that she’d return to normal as the Jaw Titan. However, Armin stopped him by threatening to sacrifice himself instead.
8 Jean Was Transformed Into A Pure Titan During Eren’s Battle Against Armin
During the final battle against Eren, he used the power of the Founding Titan to turn all Eldian refugees into monstrosities. Considering that Jean was neither an Ackerman nor a shifter, he fell under its effect and engaged in battle against Reiner Braun.
Fortunately, Yeager’s climactic defeat spelled the end of Titans’ existence, eradicating them from the face of the earth. Subsequently, Jean —and everyone else caught under the sinister effects of Eren’s spell— reverted to normal, with no critical injuries to show for their brief and horrific transformation.
7 Dot Pyxis Was Transformed By Zeke During The Marleyan Invasion Of Paradis
Dot Pyxis was a military leader who accidentally imbibed Zeke’s spinal fluid. Though his transformation wasn’t immediate, he knew that his days were numbered so long as Zeke remained alive to blackmail the Eldians.
When Marley began to get the upper hand against their island adversaries, Yeager summoned the power of the pure Titans in order to receive reinforcements. Once the invaders were thwarted, Dot and a horde of giants turned their attention against the residents of Paradis. Armin mercifully put him down after thanking him for his service.
6 Gabi Was Another Victim Of Eren’s Founding Titan
Jean wasn’t the only victim who was caught in the vicinity of Eren’s Founding Titan. Gabi was also transformed alongside him into a small Titan, one that’d contribute to the horde’s efforts in toppling Reiner so that the mysterious source of all matter could return to its host.
Luckily, her conversion was also a brief one. Following Yeager’s death, all pure Titans in the present and from the past (including Connie’s mom) were reverted to their original forms. Despite the villain’s depravity, Gabi had learned that the Eldians weren’t devils long before her humbling.
5 Dina Fritz Was Turned Into A Titan As Punishment For Her Role In The Insurrection
Dina Fritz was the mother of Zeke Yeager and an Eldian of royal blood. Along with Grisha, she conspired to achieve liberation from Marley and independence for her people.
Once betrayed by her own son, she was transformed into a monstrosity that would participate in the destruction of Shiganshina. As the Smiling Titan, she was directly responsible for the murder of Carla Yeager —Eren’s mother and Grisha’s second wife. Her actions would have ramifications not only for Paradis but also for the entire world.
4 Ymir Was Forcibly Transformed Into A Titan By Gross
Ymir’s journey to becoming a Titan was perhaps the most unique of the anime universe. She was one of the Eldian restorationists who was forcibly transformed into a monster by Sergeant Gross and his henchmen.
However, she learned to bridle her power after unwittingly consuming Marcel and absorbing the Jaw Titan. Unfortunately, her love for Historia compelled her to sacrifice herself to Marley since she didn’t believe the Eldians had a hope of survival. Her only condition was that the queen would be safe when the island fell.
3 Falco Was Turned Into A Pure Titan First & Later Became The Jaw Titan
After Niccolo heard directly from Gabi that she was responsible for murdering Sasha, he attempted to repay her barbarism with his own. Falco thrust himself in her path, taking a bottle of Zeke’s spinal fluid to the skull and accidentally absorbing its unscrupulous effects.
When Zeke transformed all nearby Eldians into pure Titans, he was among those that were converted. Fortunately, he managed to recover his humanity by eating Porco and becoming the Jaw Titan.
2 Connie Was Transformed By Eren & Used As A Weapon
Like his mother, Connie was transformed into a pure Titan through the direct and implacable will of Eren Yeager. Despite his diminutive size, he and the other converted heroes were able to debilitate Reiner far better than the feral giants outside Paradis’ walls ever could.
After Springer returned to normal, he was rejoiced to hear that he could reunite with his mother (and without child sacrifice, no less). However, the deaths of his comrades served as a grim reminder of the price of victory.
1 Eren Yeager Had No Idea He Was A Titan Shifter Until He Already Transformed
Eren inherited the Attack Titan by consuming his father —an experience that he had little say in or account of. After saving Armin from a pure Titan on their first mission as scouts, he was just as surprised as his comrades were when it was revealed he could transform into the same giants that he loathed.
Initially, Yeager didn’t have perfect control over his new form, as illustrated when he lashed out against Mikasa during the boulder mission. However, he would quickly corral and master the power he had inherited —for better or worse.
