WWE’s Rey Mysterio Channels Silver-Age Batman at WrestleMania Backlash

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for WWE WrestleMania Backlash.

Throughout his storied career, WWE superstar Rey Mysterio has been known to wear ring gear inspired by comic book superheroes, particularly when major Pay-per-views come around. For example, at SummerSlam 2012, the legendary luchador wore an all-black getup inspired by DC’s Batman. For this year’s WrestleMania Backlash, Mysterio once again paid homage to the Dark Knight, this time with a more vibrant, Silver Age-esque twist.

At WrestleMania Backlash, Rey Mysterio and his son, Dominik Mysterio, were booked to challenge Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode for the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship. Rey’s ring gear clearly paid tribute to Batman’s classic color scheme, featuring a bright blue mask and a light gray top with a bright yellow logo. Meanwhile, Dominik’s gear had more of a Robin-like aesthetic, though also featured a color scheme reminiscent of Batman’s arch-nemesis, the Joker.

Ahead of the championship bout, Dominik appeared to be out of commission due to an injury, forcing Rey to face defending champs Ziggler and Roode by himself. Halfway through the match, however, Dominik fought through the pain and made his way to the ring to help his father. The Mysterios ultimately emerged victorious to capture the SmackDown Tag Team titles, marking Dominik’s first taste of championship gold in WWE. Dominik has certainly come a long way, seeing as how his first major storyline in WWE involved Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero fighting for custody of him in a ladder match at SummerSlam 2005.

Rey Mysterio would often wear comic-inspired gear during his time wrestling for the now-defunct WCW, and started saving such ring gear for PPVs once he arrived in WWE. Mysterio began this new tradition at WrestleMania XIX in 2003, when he wore gear inspired by Marvel’s Daredevil shortly after the release of the Ben Affleck film. Other comic book characters the Biggest Little Man has paid homage to over the years include Captain America, the Flash, Silver Surfer, Heath Ledger’s Joker, Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker and, naturally, Marvel’s Mysterio.
