Days before Spiral: From The Book of Saw debuts in theaters, the upcoming horror-revenge film drops its opening torture scene to give fans a taste of the film’s twisted justice on display.
Described by co-writer John Stolberg as an “in canon” film, Spiral departs from the previous mythos of the Jigsaw killer and iconic Billy doll to tell a new kind of macabre tale. The opening scene of the Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II) directed film displays a methodical killer who seems as equally invested in brutality as punishing crooked members of law enforcement.
Spiral‘s opening starts with an armed man exploring subway tunnels only to encounter an abandoned mannequin that’s dressed in the same attire he’s currently wearing. A pig-masked, cloaked individual quickly captures him — after the man falls for the baited trap — and knocks him out. The man awakens, hung to the subway rafters and standing on a chair while a device is putting pressure on his tongue, threatening to slice it in half if he moves too much.
A television screen turns on and the masked individual speaks to the man, identifying him as Detective Boswick (Dan Petronijevic), telling him that in return for his years of lying about people, essentially “railroading” them on the witness stand, it is his turn to be railroaded. An incoming train will crash into him in two minutes unless he jumps off his chair and slices off his own tongue. Ultimately, the Detective waits too long to make a decision and is splattered.
