Resident Evil Village Needs More of Lady Dimitrescu & Her Daughters

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Resident Evil Village, available now.

Resident Evil Village‘s marketing put significant emphasis on Lady Dimitrescu and her daughters which, in turn, caused the internet to fall for the 9’6″ vampire of Castle Dimitrescu. Given her presence in the marketing and focus in the Maiden demo, many assumed that she was going to serve as the primary antagonist of Village or at the very least would have a significant role in the continuation of Ethan Winters’ story.

While Resident Evil Village has been getting great reviews from critics, many have pointed out that Lady Dimitrescu is only featured in a small portion of the game, and all signs point to Capcom not expecting her to become as popular as she did. The internet’s excitement around the character’s unique design certainly built towards the disappointment around her under-use in the story of Village.

Castle Dimistrescu is the first location that Ethan Winters will visit and serves as the game’s first act, so to speak. However, players are only there for a few hours before toppling Lady Dimitrescu and moving on to the next area. Fans were also disappointed by the end of the Castle Dimistrescu segment, with Lady Dimistrescu’s battle ending in her being definitively killed. This means that, despite all the excitement behind the character’s design, it’s unlikely that she’ll return in a future Resident Evil title. That being said, Capcom is certainly aware of the appeal behind Lady Dimistrescu’s design, so it’s likely they might take more inspiration from her for their future villains.

Along with the lack of time spent in Castle Dimistrescu, critics have also pointed out that Lady Dimitrescu’s AI is fairly easy to avoid during her chase segments. The most direct comparison that many have drawn is between Resident Evil 2 Remake‘s use of Mr. X and the Castle Dimistrescu segment in Village. Mr. X felt far less avoidable compared to Lady Dimistrescu according to critics, which ended up making her entire segment feel less impactful than what Capcom had hyped it up to be. There’s still plenty of what made the character stand out, such as her personality and gothic-inspired design, but many fans can’t help but feel as though the character deserved better.

If Lady Dimistrescu was more prominent, perhaps with her and/or her daughters following Ethan throughout more of the game, she may have been able to establish herself as the next major antagonist for Resident Evil. After the death of Albert Wesker, the series does have an opening for a new recurring villain. She was also a significant marketing draw for Capcom that would’ve been a great draw to see in future games.

That being said, her short-lived appearance in Village doesn’t exactly mean the end of the character. Given her immense popularity, Capcom may bring her back in an unofficial sense, be it in a prequel to Village or as a cameo character in future titles. She could still even return in a future Resident Evil game if Capcom is willing to be a little lax with death. This is Resident Evil, after all; there are plenty of ways Capcom could retcon Lady Dimistrescu’s death in a future title.
